View Full Version : Roll bar fastening

Ok I don't know if this is the right section to be asking this if not please forgive.
Right, I'm looking to fit my roll-bar to the car I have had the bar made by a local company, but we won't go into that it's a sore subject, my question relates to the support bars going backward. Could I fit a couple of suspension brackets to a plate welded in to the two box section uprights, the ones that are vertical between the rear hoops, and then fit a bolt through the tube. The brackets would be welded to the plate.
I seem to remember that they would not allow the original design saying that it needed two bolts to anchor the rear stays.
Does this make sense or does it seem like I am talking a load of twaddle.

That is great, but does it have to have a collar through the tube or can you just put a bolt through it. I have used 40mm tube so there is very little clearence between the tube and the inside of the bracket

A crush tube?

Definitely.

definitely a crush tube not just a bolt

Then a crush tube it is, but the roll-bar tubing wont crush, if you noticed in the first entry I had trouble with the guy who made the roll-bar, I asked him to make it out of 3 mm wall tubing, he made an executive decision and made it out of 6 mm wall thickness, yes that's 6 mm so the car has doubled its' weight and I predict having to build a f****ing wheelie bar for it. That is why I hate having to outsource things.

Just cut the suspension mount in half, make the crush tube a bit bigger than the tubing, bolt the suspension mount up to the crush tube so the spacing is set and then weld it to the chassis.

Roll-bar will be ok will just need to re-new the rear shocks every 12 month due to being worn out

What about these weld-on tube ends?

They are used in rally cars to add bracing tubes to existing roll bars. Diam is 40mm.

Now that's a damned good idea Sylvain and the best bit is I can go and collect them as they are only 5 miles away from me.

Agree, took me ages to get a bent bit of CDS tubing from someone at a reasonable rate done correctly.

it's not so much what he manufactured it's the fact he totally ignored me with regards to the materials. I requested 3mm wall thickness and he used 6 mm and it ways a bloody ton, and an aweful lot more work to drill through.

Raise the spring rate on the rear to compensate Arfon :p

Think I will need air ride to compensate, hey air ride now I bet thats something no-one has tried on a haynes, went to demon tweaks and got the parts, £11 and odd pence don't forget if you look at demon tweaks you have to add vat. Did you know that jjc rally is also demon tweaks but cheaper.;)
