Having read Chris' tome is it worth me buying the above model vehicle.
It appears that this engine may hit the bonnet and the 5 speed box is bigger, meaning modifying the transmission tunnel.
Does anybody have any experience of using this engine with carbs and the mods required on the tunnel?
Any help appreciated.
Cheers
John

The modifications are listed here (http://www.haynes.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=53), complete with details and drawings. The engine isn't the greatest in its power delivery and its fat. Its not that its a bad idea, its just that there are more suitable engines to use.

I'm using the escort version of the engine (16v, 150bhp) in my kit car. and its not been a problem yet.

Many thanks for the quick reply.
Seems like a lot of work so I think I'll hold fire for something else.

John it might be worth thnking about
as it will have the bigger front discs and discs at the rear
you could sell/swop the mt75 gearbox for a type 9 and you should be all square on the deal just your engine of choice to source as you can use the column and h/brake so its not a bad option

Hi Les,
What really grabbed me about the vehicle was that it was running, had a full service history and alloy wheels so I thought it would be great donor to also get an age related plate.
You've now got me thinking again. It's my first build and the info deezee gave was great but the cut steel would be different from the kit supplied by armoto. Maybe I should have a word with them?

what size are the alloy wheels?

as they need to be 15inch alloys to clear the rear lower wishbone bolts.
just thought it might help in some way :)

John before you get to worried or wade in
speak to axle on here he has put a twinky (8 valve ford twin-cam) in it has caused him a few problems but he has got it in
as for the Armoto kit they might supply one with the variations for the mt75 but it would only be a £10 of box you would have to buy and chop up yourself
the zetec out of a mondeo/escort would also go on an mt75 box
in all honesty i think the zetec is a better engine to use
do a bit of research and make your own mind up but , the zetec is easier to to tune and get bits for and as said before that car is not a bad donor really

i agree with that mark
before we broke ours for the roadster we a good bit of fun with it
a really good motor ......but you cant do much with it and if you ever get the chance of a blast in a 1800 escort zetec or a 2.0l mondeo you will straight away be able to notice the difference its just better and a bit more revvy and abit more smoother and picks up that little bit better and then all the bits to make it go better and to get it run in stand alone format are available really easy and off the shelf etc
also me and Tj can lift the zetec in and out of our chassis the twinky would need bigger cahoonas than we have got

So... if I bought a Mondeo how much of it could I use for a donor? Enough for an age related plate? What about the emissions, there a lot tougher aren't they?
Another curve ball....could you use an old cortina instead of an escort?
Awesome replies guys.

Hi John

There are good points to the 20liter with mt 75 box. The gear box is stronger, the brakes are better as they have vented discs and larger drums I think the diff is mostly 3.62 . It ends there with the engine as the zetec makes for a much better option.

i managed to buy a pre aug 95 mondeo ( no cat needed etc ) with a recently rebuilt engine for approx £170 approx took the engine out sold the wheels cheap to a friend in need for £10 and sold the shell to a scrappy for approx £110 simples.........
do a search for my previous posts
..............
oh and then the locost theme went tits up
i ,ve since bought a megajolt to run the the sparks
and a bogg bros quad carb set up and alloy manifold to supply the the go faster juice
but then i,m easily led its that bloody lad of of mine he likes shiny things and leads me on

in my honest opinion
a good old 2.0l pinto is still a good power unit the old crossflow is getting long in the tooth but the 1.6 with lots of money thrown at it is useful
andif you really want to use a cortina/escort or capri with a live back axle you would be better off building a locost or a Mc sorley as they are designed for a live axle the roadster is really pitched at using a sierra set up to provide an independant rear suspension (IRS ) set up
try and formulate a game plan of where you want to end up.
to re-engine later can have lots of hidden costs

Thanks again Les.
Going to lie down in a dark room and mull over the options.
Think I was trying to run before I could walk. After scanning Ebay, Trade it and Autotrader there does seem to be plenty of donors so I'll hold fire for a bit. I've also been talking to someone locally who's building a locost but he's changed the rear end to accomodate IRS.
Cheers

My donor was a 2.0 DOHC. it has a 3.9 non lsd 7.5 inch differential. Which is pretty useless for what we want.

Hi,

I'm a new member. Have been unable to open the link in the above message from DEEZEE on 22 June 2009.

I am looking for data on the transmisson tunnel changes to accommodate an MT75 gearbox. The link would seem to hold the answer. Is it accessed by another route? Your advise would be welcomed.
