Newbie my mrs sent me here!

My mrs was planning on suprising me with a flat pack chassis for my birthday but it isn't happen due to not being able to find a supplier. Oh well since then I may have been swayed to buy the steel and go for it... So I was wondering what exactly I order from the metal merchant and I have no idea who I should call, I stay in Scotland.

So yeah seeing all you guys building your chassis have seriously spurred me on!

What's the best tools I will need to build a chassis have a 150a mig welder what the best cutting method etc.

welcome to the forum,

you,ll need approx 40mtrs of 25x25x1.5 erw steel & depending on if you build the rear tub area as per the book plan or if you decide to use a Triton(grp 1piece tub) rear tub then approx 12mtrs (comes in 6mtr lengths) of 19x19x1.5 erw steel, & also some round tube, tho can,t remember the qty as i didn,t use the round stuff.
all in it should cost you about £130 for the steel to build the main chassis.

as for cutting method............ some used circular saw,s , others use band saw,s or hacksaw,s & cutting discs in a grinder.

Thanx for the help so far. I think I'll get exact figures on quantity of metal
and I'll order it all at once. I think I'll prob go for a grp rear tub.

I'm really wanting to go for a t5 engine with either BMW box or a Volvo 340 box. But I'm kinda wanting to walk before I can run!

Hi , yes it was me who suggested to your wife that you have a look at this forum,

so yes i apologise straight away, laughs, as you,ll soon be spending lots of time in the garage, but as you,re both mechanics it,ll be home from home for you :D

I don,t have a build diary as such, ( i,m useless with computers ) but there are a few photos of my build in the thread "Big Day" in the chassis section.

the forum is here for all to enjoy & everyone is there to help if you need it etc, we all learn from each other. :cool:

If you go down the T5 route use a 760 box,the 340 wont fit or take the power.

Hey thanx for the reply about the t5? are you talking from experience?? you wouldnt know if i need to modify the transmission tunnel to accomodate the volvo tranny?

im at the planning atage at the mo and im just about to buy the metal to build the chassis.

so any help on this route appreciated.
