handbrake cable position

which way is the handbrake cable meant to enter the drum backing plate , from the rear of the car or from the front ?
i,ve seen different photos showing either way but is there a correct or wrong way :confused:

Andy, it goes into the backplate from the front and attatches to the rear shoe, Dennis.

such a basic thing to do but yet my head couldn,t work it out:o :rolleyes:

plus guess who forgot to remove ones thumb before a front upright landed on it :eek: ouch ! & thats not the word that came out of my mouth, lol.

I've been looking into this as well.
In the Sierra it is clear that the 2 cable guides make a nice S-shape. The cable is connected to the drum back plate at the front side of the car.

I've collected a great deal of pictures of Locost and other Zevenz and there are some that have reversed this.
In practice it would have 2 advantages. That means if it is safe to do so !!!!
First the cable would make only one nice C bend. Secondly, it would mean that the brake pipes can run immediately behind the seat back body panel where they meet the flexy brake pipes at brackets that are safely positioned.

So that's where I am at the moment.
I would like to read some expert advice here.
I'm not going to turn the system back-to-front without good advice. That means if it is safe to do so !!!!

Not a good idea to reverse the backplates as there are leading and trailing shoes on the drum set up,and they would be in the wrong direction ie trailing shoe at the front and it is a lot smaller in surface area.

thats where i was getting confused myself so thought best to ask the question,

It is possible to put some shoes on the wrong way and it will work,there is also a possibllity of grabbing as again they are not supposed to go that way.

Its probably best left as nature intended to coin the phrase.

hand brake cable has to go into the front. i tried it round the other way but it didnt work out. if you planned to do it that way when your still building the chassis you can get away with it, but if your chassis is finished and painted its a bit o a pita to modify.

I posted up the same thoughts a while back

The cable would be a nicer run the other way but as flyerncle quite rightly says you have a leading shoe that was designed to be a certain way so best use them as they were intended :)

It would work if you could swap the arms on to the leading shoe but as far as I remember there is no hole in it to mount the arm,So me thinks it's best left alone.
