work bench??

just out of interest how have people been making the workbench/build table?

i mean supports and such? not too sure and i dont really want to go spend a fortune on a load of wood to find out iv wasted some more valuable pennys on pointless thinggys :eek:

if someone could post a pic would be really helpful

I have a fully braced sheet of 18mm ply (longitudinal bracings at 10" centres and a few cross braces as well)

This sits on some beefy sawhorses, made from 2x4s. In fact, they are seriously beefy:D, and stackable. I got the plans here (http://woodworking.about.com/od/shopequipmentsupplies/ss/woodSawhorses.htm)
The working height might be a bit tall for some, but I'm 6ft3, and once the chassis is fully welded, it will just sit on the saw horses, thus lowering it by nearly 4", ready for the rest of the work

As you can see, I also slung a few spare 3x2s underneath, between the sawhorses. These are for storage.

The bracing is inset from the edge of the table to give room for clamping. I also drilled 30mm Dia holes around the edge (3No. on the long sides and 1No. on each short side), this is to enable me to just drop the end of my welding torch through, it then sits there perfectly.

Another little tip - don't clamp stuff to the egde of the bench for plasma cutting;) it starts to smoke a bit

My dad and I built it but mainly my dad. Haha do you know howmuch thats going to give him a big head when I tell him that! He's a perfectionist and a printer! Built the lean too aswell.

Makes me giggle. I AM a joinner bye trade and my build table is on a set of (just about holding togeather) bandq plastic trassals. I culd have built a masterpeace with draws for tools and an earth strip set flush in a reebate. Sometimes wish I did but.....

Good tables there though. Your dar shuld be prawed. Making a garden feature out of a roadster build is inspired.

A designer might try and pass it of as "tying in niceley with the garden due to it's almost organic quolateys. Akin to a rodadendram slowley growing n size and for till evenualy it is the centerpeace of the househould"
