After i got the info needed for the vr sensor polarity i spent an hour in the garage today in -6 temperatures! to see if the engine would run on edis

Its a 1.8cvh on bike carbs and it fired up instantly! i was well chuffed

I revved it lightly a few times then switched off the ignition but the engine kept running  i thought it will cut out in a second but it didnt!

At this point i was worried about it getting too hot so i disconnected the negative from the battery to kill it...........................and it still kept running

I pulled off the plug leads to finally kill it, anyone know why this happened?
Its was like it was alive like herbie :D

When i stripped the loom i found quite a thick power wire that only came on with 2nd turn of the ignition and was dead when the ignition was off, this is what i used to feed 3 seperate fuses for fuel pump, edis4 and the coilpack is it possible that when the engine is running that this stays live even when the key is turned off or do people think it is something else?

Also how was it running with the negative batery terminal disconnected, will that be power coming from the alternator?

I just wish i had filmed it for you all to laugh at, i was running around like i was in a Benny Hill sketch tying to stop it!

Sorry for the long post

It was running with no negative lead from the battery?

But died when you pulled the plug lead?

Was the alternator attatched and connected?

Haha - i can just picture the scene.

Sounds like it was running off the alternator. Did you have a switched live connection from the alternator - have a look at the diagram here -http://westfield-world.com/Wiring_files/Wiring_frames.html for comparison

do you have the battery light hooked up on the dash?

Alternator was hooked up and working and the battery light comes on dash and goes out when engine is running

I can prob figure it out when i can spend a bit of time on it with multi meter, but hopefully the people with some electrickery knowledge can give me some ideas first :)

I will prob just find a different + feed for the coil, edis and fuel pump where would the best place to take this from?

disconnect the battery warning light and see if it still runs on. chances are you need a diode in there. the mjolt and edis require far less power to keep the car running so alt feedback through the battery warning light becomes a problem. i had it on my car but it would only run on for 10 seconds max. there is a write up on how to cure it on the megasquirt website if i remember correctly.

remember its not an ecu its a learning tool :D as i have found out lol

Scrounged a diode whilst at work today and have just soldered it in to the battery warning light circuit

Now it stops as it should, as soon as you turn off with the key

Problem solved :)

Thanks Ash

I can imagine lots of head scratching on that one, just glad you encountered the problem first :p

I know i said i would probably figure it out for myself but im glad i asked here first because i think it would have taken me days to suss that one out!

Ha ha ha ha, good one :) Parasitic current through the warning light feeding the ECU :)
