View Full Version : upright mushrooms

I do not understand why the hole is off center on the mushrooms, surely if the hole is not in the center of the insert it could cause an issue if they were not perfectly in the same place in the upright as the other side?

It's called an eccentric top mount. Combined with the adjuser on the wishbone it allows for castor and camber adjustment.

The hole needs to go to the front of the strut clamp to give the correct caster other wise the car won't self centre as it should. You could put the hole in the middle of the mushroom but then you'd have to modify the front top wishbones to sit further back to give the correct caster. It might mean that the ball joint and track rod end that acts as the pivot might not last as long.

so why do gts tuning sell them with the hole in the center for the haynes roadster?

I bought mine from Rally Design, they were also center holed.
They fit but the off center ones are better.
It's hard enough to get these to self center with the correct mushrooms.

P.S no comment on GTS

Perhaps for their own chassis which is slightly different in many respects to teh Locost/Roadster. They may have dialed in the Castor into their suspension geometry using the wishbone locations.

The eccentric ones alow for fine tuning and for adjustment if you fancy setting your castor up differently to the norm.

I have lots of comments on GTS tuning and Darren George none of which I can put on this forum or any other! If it was my money that I was spending I would look at other suppliers even my immediate competion.

i got my mushrooms from a car that was being "broken"..... £5 for the pair :D

and yes they are the "off center" type

The reason they are offset is to align the top and bottom pivots with the axle centre line better, If you draw an imaginary line through the Sierra upright you will see that if the mushroom insert is concentric it will miss the centre line of the axle, requiring more effort to self centre.

The reason some suppliers mushrooms are concentric is cost, put plain and simple they are cheaper to make.

Hope that all make sense :D

Kind regards

John

This has all been done before you need offset mushrooms for the best geometry with sierra uprights.
gts will tell you anything to get a sale .
its all to do with kingpin inclination
there is a search tool on this forum
and yes you do want both sides the same thats why when i made my offset mushrooms i marked them with a file to show the position of max offset

Iv used the search and couldnt find what i was asking, you dont need to answer any questions if you feel its a problem, i was asking my question to who ever wants to reply!

Sorry I didnt mean to sound rude
ask away thats what were here for
had a quick look there used to be a thread all about the offset but appears to have disapeared
what i meant was sometimes its quicker to search than to ask as most of the answers are there already
seems this one got taken by the hacker

Dont qoute me on this but I think anti dive was mentioned that is built into the Sierra front geometry and the combination of the offset mushroom and the way the Roadster setup works corrects it all ie kpi/castor angles camber self center etc.
And again no quoting but people have had problems using central holed mushrooms, because of the self center requirement in the IVA.

With the cheaper centred adaptors mine drove fine but wouldn't self centre for the SVA, had to put lots of toe-out on and pump tyres up to get them to pass. Changed them to the offset adapters after with the holes right at the front and all is fine now. Cost more but you've got to have them......;)

Now if we could just find some one who supplies these for a cheap price....mmmm

There may be a good reason why this cant be done. AS the offset is approx 7.5mm, why not use std cheap mushrooms and either mod the top arms or just move the top mounting brackets back 7.5mm. This would keep the king pin angle correct and have self centering with improved castor.

i could machine them for people if they wanted but i didnt think the 3ge price was too bad. the cost of a 6m length of bar the correct size to make them is what put me off making them.

Don't worry I'll work out who is who.

The drilling and tapping of the upright is not to stop the mushroom from spinning, theres very little chance of that by the time you've done the pinch bolt up with 60-100lbs of force. The idea is to keep Mr. VOSA happy in case your silly enough not to check every nut and bolt before driving it at 70mph+.
