Hi,

just got myself a ZX9r fuel pump and relay.

Non electrical person question - sorry. ( also may be a daft question).

DO i need the relay? or can I just use a separate switch to power the pump?

cheers in advance.

Pumps draw a large current usualy, you need to find out the rating of the switch and the draw from the pump.

Personaly I would stick with the relay setup.

I think the load of the pump is to much for a switch. While it would work for a while, I think the contacts would burn out in the switch pretty soon. You could of course put a heavy duty switch and wiring in, but you might as well just use a relay

Like Deezee and TT say, always fit a relay for a fuel pump. If you try to pull too much through a normal switch it will burn up at some point and leave you stranded. It's dead easy to do, instead of taking the pump feed wire direct to the pump take it to one side of the relay coil, the other side of the relay coil goes to earth. Then take a live feed to the common of the switch side of the relay (usually marked c)and another wire from the n/c terminal of the relay to the pump. When you turn on the pump switch the relay is energised which sends 12V to the pump.
PM me if you need more info.
