Has anyone got any 15mm ID steel tube they wana sell LOCOST ;)

What are you needing 15mm ID tube for?

Edit: Im guessing this is the 19mm OD for the wishbones? If so, search Haynes Roadster on ebay, Spikehaus is selling some on there.

so basicly 19mm-3/4" x 2mm-14g OD CDS gives 15mm ID how much do you need?

I am wondering now,

does the escort rack have the small splined shaft like the none PAS sierra, or the fatter one like the PAS Sierra.

My bar calc was based on the assumption that it's the NON PAS one. But there's a pic on Page 78 that shows a triangular shaft which I think was just used on the PAS Sierra..

My rack turns up Saturday.. So I will see which shaft fits

Unless someone can measure the splined shaft on their rack.

Measured both..

Small one seems to be about 13.7mm but may expand
Big one seems to eb about 17mm but may close up.

Hopefully I can confirm tomorrow what fits what.

The longer one (right) is what I have and it fits the escort rack. Which one is that pas/ non pas?

the long one is NON Pas..

The short one is 2WD PAS..

I am fairly sure 4x4 PAS has 2 UJ's and no rubber dog chew.




SO Back to Tallon...

It will be about 1m of the tube..

I will measure the approximate length again later. And confirm the fittment of the joint on the rack.

1 Meter should be more than sufficient.

And the thin shaft fits the escort rack.

So I think I need 15MM ID tube.

I would sugest if you want to be sure that you measure your own shafts though :p

OK

This is turning into a bit of a survey, but if someone is able to supply my requirements are:-

500mm long,

19mm internal hole.

However thick it should be.:D

PS. Mocked it all up today just in case someone comes good with the part and found that my steering lock is broken.:(

So if anyone has a 91/92 Sierra steering lock lying around I will pay:D (no key required)

My original shaft is 19mm so I was thinking 19mm internal 23mm external. That sort of thing anyway.

Ginge......... if you mean the steering extension shaft then be careful of how large a diameter you go to, as the steering shaft gets quite close to part " U2", My own extension shaft is stepped.....20mm o/d at the rack end going upto 25mm o/d where it meets the CP16 .

my extension is thick walled stuff by the way.

My original shaft that I have cut in half is 19mm diameter, so either end of the new extension would need to that big internally with enough wall thickness say 4mm.

Then for most of the length it could be turned down to 19mm outside diameter to match the original.

If you can supply some dimensions....length/diameter/couplings needed etc with a drawing then i,m sure Saturn could make something for you , also we,d need to take into account the prob that Ash encountered where as his upper coupling was deemed to be too close to the CP16 bulkhead.
We,d be happy to help out if we can for you.

I wonder if putting the bulkhead on the inside would be an easy fix, would give a little extra clerance. The joint is very close to the bulkhead on the sierra so I am a bit unsure why it's a problem.

In light of Ash's recent IVA fail on the steering column, i'll be needing to review my own ;)

Now just thinking a little outside the box .... How's about turning some bosses to join the extension tube/bar, say 60-80mm long !!??

This would allow the use of 15mm soild bar or perhaps 19mm OD thick wall tube.
Once welded, they could be drilled & fitted with a roll pin as a fail safe ( Way OTT, I know ) :o

I know on my own build, a thinner extension shaft would give me a tad more clearance of the offending chassis rail ;)

Like I say .... Just thinking aloud :)

The joint is very close to the bulkhead on the sierra so I am a bit unsure why it's a problem.

This one has me a little confused myself :confused: :confused:

I understood that the Sierra's steering shaft is designed to collapse ..... One of the clamping plates on the triangular section is held in place by a shear pin & in the event of a frontal impact, this pin would shear & allow that clamp to slide up the triangular shaft !!?? :confused:

The later adjustable column has a sliding triangular shaft, the whole unit is a bit bulkier though.

sorry got preoccupied with repacking my exhaust. bonus is that its now well under 99db. there was naff all wadding in the blooming thing.

ok back on subject...

this is how it was before. the inspector didnt like the fact that the bearing and joint were so close together. he felt that if i had an accident then the fire wall would have to collapse before the steering rack behind it collapsed

the solution he suggested was to put the bearing behind the firewall as this would demonstrate a degree of collapsibility

here is the picture.

as you can see the bearing is now held in place by a piece of 15mm plate made nicely to shape and welded to the chassis tube all the way round (was tricky i admit)
