View Full Version : Questions on 2.0L DOHC

Hi all,

This is my first time on the forum and as a bit of background I've just started collecting the bits for my first time build of a Roadster. By chance I had the opportunity to pick up a low mileage Sierra 2.0L Gli as a donor car but now looking over many of the historical posts I have a bunch of questions.

I understand that the DOHC engine and associated MT75 gearbox is not ideal but it can be used. I don't have an issue with the tunability of the unit, 125bhp sounds loads and it's looks good. However my questions are:

1. Engine clearance; the enigine is tall and the plenum chamber sits even higher. What modifications have other builders used, I'd still like to keep it fuel injected?

2. Transmission tunnel mods. Do the published changes work in practice and is there any downside?

3. Transmission ground clearance. Are there any problems here?

4. Is changing from the DOHC to a Zetec unit after IVA a vabiable ooption if needed?

5. Anything else I should be aware of? I'd love to hear from people who have goen through the 'pain' of using this donor.

Basically I'd like to know is it worth carrying on with the current donor I have (it's a very tidy car) or should I look for something else more appropriate.

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

GLi?

1) Bonnet hump or custom plenum. DO KEEP IT EFI THOUGH ;)

2) Onlydownside is a little less leg room for the driver.

3) Nope

4) Yes should eb a reasonable easy swap.

5) ??

That is the sort of donor I was looking for, Does it have rear discs?

I still haven't decided to go with discs or drums yet, just know I need a mt75 gearboxed sierra as i made the chassis to suit

A type 9 will fit an MT75 chassis but not the other way round.

James.........

not sure if you are aware...........but a Type 9 gearbox will still fit in a transmission tunnel that has been made for the MT75, tho it won,t work the other way around , an MT75 won,t fit in a type 9 tunnel.

so don,t despair if you can,t find a MT75 box ;) :)

i,m no good at playing the drums but i manage a tune on my old school recorder...lol
for fitting the 8valve dohc speak to axle (on hear) he has done it but its not the easiest fit..
as previously posted most 8valve dohc motors were in disc braked sierras
and please beaware there are two types, solid and ventilated discs the ventilated were fitted on the more powerful variants xr,s and cossie,s etc
and it was a popular swop to fit the bigger discs etc
also the dohc sierras with abs had 260mm discs up front so there are endless possibilies of mix and matching your brakes to get your preference
hth les g

oh and as for the plenum poking through the bonnet i have seen pictures of one cut into three bits horizontally, the middle bit discarded and the upper and lower bits welded back together .
it looked ok as well and worked ok so it can be done if bumps in your bonnet are not your thing

Ventialted front disks were fitted to the Majority of Sierras, certainly most donors left arround will have Ventialted fronts. Normal in 260mm on 2.0 Cars.

Only Mk1 1.3, 1.6 would normaly have 240mm non vented disks.

If you're going to stick a Zetec in it, why not do it now?

Knowing how much work goes into plumbing, wiring and exhausting whatever engine you fit, and replacing the bonnet you've cut a hole in, I wouldn't want to be swapping it out in a hurry.

If you are using all of the bits from the donor, other than the engine, it won't be an issue with DVLA.

I ditched the DOHC - they are tall and have you felt the weight of one?

Neil

zetec is not vastly lighter, and without proven age ( that it's realy early!) it will require an enhanced emissions test for the IVA.

It will also require the early NON pats ECU which are not cheap to find.

The DOHC is probably more torquey, not usualy an advantage on a lightwight car mind...

Mk5 Escort 1.8 Zetec engine - Pre 1994 ...... 1992 ideal ( non PATS ) ;) :)

Pre-Pats ECU Expensive .!!??..... Picked up a spare from the breakers today .... complete with the engine loom that I FUBARED on my Zetec engine :o

All for the grand sum of £5

HanyAndy could be envious :)

On my Zetec (1993 Mondeo) the injectors subharness is totally crumbling to pieces, there's exposed oxidised copper at each injector plug. That's strange, because the Sierra's harness (6 years older) was in much better shape.

Ford changed their insulation for a few years, cripples many otherwise healthy engines with random faults..

Neil

I moved mine (RS2000 16V) on my own, in and out of a van.... so I'm either awesome strong, or its not that heavy :D But they are taller..... my bonnet has a 6mm high teardrop bulge to clear the oil filler cap

A DOHC engine fits under the bonnet. My oil cap however is higher than the bonnet line. So if it fits under, does it matter that the engine you have already got, is a taller than a Zetec?

A dohc has the same thermostat position, so the plumbing isn't going to change much if you move to a zetec in the future. The exhaust and inlet are also in the same place.... so the bonnet does not have to be "scrapped".

People are all a bit melodramatic when it comes to the DOHC engine. "It will eat your children and make you blind!!!"

Also if anyone is ditching the DOHC, can I have it :D

I have had a number of I4 DOHC sierras... And every time I have said

"NEVER AGAIN"

I hate them.

My Galaxy has a 2.3 16...

I don't Realy like it...

But they are good solid torquey smooth units...

I am just a V6 man
