Hi all,

thought everything was alright with the alt, charging etc engine stopping no problems??? So I thought.

Ran the car yesterday, bit of revs etc. Thought I'd check all was ok, battery was showing 16V across the terminals, Now I'm no electrical whizz but that's a bit much, Tried it today and its nearly 17V and the engine won't stop now.

I'm assuming its the alt that F**ked and hopefully that extra charge is keeping it running.

Has anyone else had this problem, anyone got a spare alternator?

I'll give it ago tomorrow but I'll dis-connect the alt and see if she stops (hopefully), don't want to fry the battery.

All ideas appreciated:D

thats too high and over charging - should be 13.5v to 15v max

Like wot Tex says. You should never see more than about 14.8 at the battery, at tickover it should be round about the 13.5 mark. Don't know why you can't switch it off though - I assume your car is non injected?

Cheers Fella's,

thought as much, I'll have to get one sorted soon - need to get car up and running (rolling road).

It's running bike carbs and I've had no problems stopping it until yesterday so hopefully linked to the high volts (hopefully).

thanks again.

sounds like the regulator has packed in. you can replace just the regulator but ist more bother than its worth

Cheers Ash,

knew it was the alt but nothing like having a drip.

I could of changed it but got one off the bay for £30 + delivery so hardly worth it and I get a year guarantee:)

Hi all,

thought I'd update on the alternator crisis:)

received and fitted the new alt, car started up and stopped. (Decided to fit an electrical one way valve (diode) to help the stopping as well). But not much sign of any charging going on, gave it some revs, charging light went out but still only a smidge above 12v???

I then started to fit the battery cover and thought whats this big fat red wire doing hanging there:o :o No wonder it wasn't charging some thick t**T forgot to electrical connect the said item.

Needless to say its charging nicely now, and it stops - bargain.:)

Another fine lesson learnt.
