View Full Version : Vin Plate for IVA

This evening I made my VIN plate after recieving my number from the DVLA.
I intend to weld this to the chassis.

Section 18 Statutory Plates:
12.The characters used for the VIN stamped into the chassis, frame or other similar structure must be at least 7mm high. This does not apply in the case of a "Visible VIN" provided on a Mass Produced vehicle
I used a centre punch to etch the characters, is this ok?

5.The Stamped in VIN must be marked on the chassis, frame or other similar structure on the right hand side of the vehicle. (see note 5 & 6)
I'm assuming this is the off side?

6.The Stamped in VIN must be placed in a clearly visible and accessible position by a method such as hammering or stamping so that it can not be obliterated or deteriorate.
I was going to weld my plate onto the top of the diagonal rail in the chassis bay, is this acceptable or not? Pretty much anywhere it is put it can be tampered with a hammer.

Yeah that was on LB last week (maybe one before)

I don't really see the difference between a bit of 3mm plate welded to the chassis or actually stamping the chassis (apart from covering up an existing vin)
Both can be damaged with an angle grinder.

Steve i think you would struggle to stamp direct onto the box section as it would just dent. At least with a 3mm plate you can support it with a lump of thick metal and give it a good thump, i doubt if stamping direct onto the box section would come out legible.

Heres one I made eariler (well last night).
I used the back of my vice as its solid and a sharp centre punch. Hope its ok.
The letters are 10mm high as it says larger than 7mm.

I could have a go an CNC engraving one, depends on how soon you want it?

Adrian

I'm not in a rush, keep on finding things that need remaking. It's annoying me a bit. Dropped the engine in today and the steering column hits the mounts. Need a solution for that now.

how early can you apply for the VIN number and is this the bit that cost's?

SeriesLandy

No it's free, don't know how early you can apply but I don't think there is a time limit on the number.
Just use ash's letter in the amendments thread and change it to suit yourself and your local dvla office.

Deanno,

I got one quite un-expectedly one-day, see story here:

http://www.haynes.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=5188

Although it possibly depends on the DLVA office and staff, so YMMV.

in the letter it says
"The car I am building is a Haynes Roadster. It is a Lotus 7 Replica Kit car based on a single Ford Sierra donor car. All the running gear such as engine, gearbox, braking system, differential, steering etc is taken from the Sierra. If necessary I can provide the registration/identification details of the Ford Sierra that I have used for parts to build the kit car."

all i am wondering as i'm using some parts from a sierra (different cars) and engine from my escort etc would i replace the above paragraph with what i'm using or delete it all together?

Any help is usefull help

Hi Adrian,

Nice to meet you today and thanks so much for dropping of my VIN member, it looks great as does your car. Thank you so much for taking me for a spin and letting me crawl all over your car looking at stuff. Seats are a great idea and will probably be the ones I use as they look like they will do well with the mx5 tunnel mod. It's a great job your doing so start charging people so you can continue to offer the service.

I'll be needing one of the plates too!:D

Speak soon

Chris
