After posting up some photos of my finished car it was commented that my cycle wings maybe too far forward so I,ve been reading the IVA manual & trying to get my head around the IVA requirements for the front cycle wings,

So , I,ve replicated the diagram from the IVA manual onto some clear perspex & placed it against my wheels/cycle wings.

I can,t copy the relevant page from the manual onto this thread so here,s the notes from the manual...

from the attached photo do you think I have my cycle wings fitted in accordance to the IVA manual standard?

1. The vehicle must be fitted with wheel guards

2. The wheel guard must extend at least 30 degrees from the center of the wheel to the front

3. The wheel guard must extend at least 50 degrees from the center of the wheel to the rear

4. The wheel guard must cover the full breadth of the tyre throughout the required dimensions

5. The rear of the wheel guard must not terminate above a horizontal plane of 150mm above the wheel center

Yep you have them too far forward round the wheel Andy.

Front of wing wants to be level with front edge of rim then those wings then cover down to a horizontal line thru the wheel centre if that makes sense?

From the description and the diagram it sounds like he's ok??

The front is past 30Deg
The back is past 50Deg
The back is below the 150MM Line.

Thanks Mark :)

This is where i get confused ( doesn,t take much I know :o )

Standard number 5 states that the REAR of the wheel guard must not terminate above a horizontal plane of 150mm above the wheel center......

so with the perspex device up against my wheel/cycle wing the photo shows that my wing is below the 150mm horizontal line ( i,ve copied the sketch from the manual onto the perspex )

and as long as the front of the cycle wing is further forward than 30 degrees & the rear 50 degrees & that the rear terminates below the 150mm line then in my opinion its within the guidelines is it not ?

The part thats confusing me is that the manual doesn,t state the rear of the wing needs to be level with the centerline of the wheel but below the 150mm parameter

Or have i lost the plot ? :D

Get a big squarey thing and put it up against the rim at the front, the wing sits at this point then the rear will be on the centre line of the wheel. If the wing is too far round then it will throw stones and allsorts of other nasties that might be in the road up at you...last thing you want is horse or cow dump in yer fizzgog let alone a stray stone:)

MarkB is right it sticks to a hot exhaust better than sikaflex.

 :D Yuck

But APART from having stuff thrown up ( stones & horse/cow sticky stuff ) do my cycle wings position meet the IVA criteria ?

As thats my main concern at moment :o

Basically its a case of what is passable for the IVA verses the practical side etc .

Thanks for your help Mark, I appreciate it :)

Just looked at David 17 car who has had a test and no mention of failing on anything but a leak.

thanks Mike,
I,ve been looking at lots of pics from various builds & as you say....I think I,ll be ok for the test , tho may have to reconsider the wings position to stop sticky stuff & stones coming up from the wheels .

They'll pass fine Andy the way they are positioned, there's plenty of room on the wings if they are positioned with a bit of car.

Nice Template, very similar to the testers one.....Andrew

I would advise fitting it closer to the front limit so there is more wing on the rear of the tyre, as long as it's within the angle of dangle required though it will pass IVA.

thanks TT, Adrian, Andy & Mark :)

Its good to know the wings will pass the IVA requirement & I agree, mud flaps will be a good thing post IVA as the mrs would never forgive me if she got a face full of horse or cow sticky stuff  .....it,d be funny tho :D

Thanks for your input guys:cool:
