top belt mounts in cross tube?

anyone know if there are any reasons why a hole cant be drilled all the way through in the cross tube on the roll bar and the threaded tubes welded into them doing away with thoes flat plates?
i think it would be neater and have less edges.

I think that is the way most folk prefer to do them ;)

That is certainly the way I am doing mine & I believe Ash done the same :)

Truth be known, I expect most IVA inspectors would prefer to see them done that way.

The threaded tube must be welded on both sides of the bar to pass iva.
I did mine as per the book but cut the cross bar out as I felt it was too thin, I bought some new bush tubes off Ronnie and will put them through the bar when the time comes.

ok all i need now is a 20mm drill bit with a shank that will fit my drill (13mm)

You need a "blacksmiths" bit which has a 13mm diameter shank.:) Tool Station stock them.

Blacksmiths drill bits are available in a range of larger sizes, have a reduced shank & are well suited to use in a hand drill :)

Just remember to choose a slow drill speed ;)

Use a hole saw, drill a pilot hole the same size as that on the hole saw then bingo......or if you have them a rotobroach is a really good way if you must have them on the roll bar as I would sooner see them fitted to the chassis.

Mine are either too big or too small, besides the two way postage of one would probably be almost as expensive as an ebay El-Cheapo :D

The top rail that runs along the top of the seat bulkhead is plenty high enough

Also use some form of lubricant as you drill it( WD40 very good and cheap).:)

Step drills are good too, i have one thats steps from 4mm to 28mm in 2mm increments and fits in a small chuck no problems

Admitedly they are designed for lighter work but i have used them on heavier stuff plenty of times with no problems as long as you use an appropriate drill speed
