Not necessarily - it's all down to engine age.

If the engine was manufactured in 1995 or earlier you wont need a cat regardless of whether one was fitted in the donor car or not.

Have you found a way of proving the age of an mx5 enging?

Nope!
I'm hoping the V5 from the donor will be enough.
If you find a better way let me know!

You need proof the engine is pre August 1995 to avoid a catalyst. Mazda's uk HQ should be able to provide this from the vin/engine number. If you're running the electrics and engine management from the donor vehicle this is not so much of a problem as all mx5s were supplied new with a catalyst so they are capable of passing the cat emissions if you keep the cat in the system, unlike the Sierra engines which were not able to pass the cat test.

everything iva you need to know is here
http://http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/Transport_files/IVA_M1_Inspection_Manual.pdf
its long winded but you need to have this informaton to build a car to pass an iva.
the cat bits are under section 02b there will be no "exact match" cases for almost all kitcars and there is a note about "effective dates" of amatuer built cars you need to pay attension to
