I have aquired a 1996 Sierra XR4x4 V6 Doner Car with ABS for very few pound notes. Has any one had experience in using this as a Doner Car, and if so how much can be used, and what will I have to aquire from other sources? I am assuming that the rear axles, prop shaft etc can be used, but have concerns on the size on the engine block and gear output.

i beleive the frontwards prop would foul on the passenger side footwell or the drivers cant remember :)

you can use all the bits other than the gearbox. a type 9 or mt 75 wont set you back too much

if you want to use the abs i can give instruction but you wont need it to be honest as it will only get on your nerves round a track

Cheers, this is a good point, but being a typical engineer I like the challenge of making things work!, I may regret that statement! guess this can be disabled for track days.

No problems just pull the fuse when you go on a track.

I'm trying to build the BMW ABS from my doner as it adds safety for the road and I think it may be required under the new IVA test.

Can't the MTX75 box from the 4x4 be used without the front drive shafts? or will the drive on the side of the box fout the tunnel?

you can send it away and have it adapted to 2wd but it will cost more than a type 9/mt75 although it will be stronger. i did look into it once but decided against it due to cost and keeping things simple. i believe there is also an issue with the input shaft being too long/short that needs to be modified.

I thought I ought to search before starting a new topic, and hey! it works!

I'm brand new on this forum (lazyness) and wanted to find out a few things.

I've just found an xr4x4 (friend of a friend) and couldn't resist. My main concern has been the issue with the gearbox. Have you managed to sort this out? Which route did you take?

My other worry was whether the front uprights would cause any issues?

Would love some reassurace on these points! Cheers in advance.

Hi Oscar,

Having almost 2 years elaspsed since I raised this thread, I now consider myself an expect on the 4x4 mfi sierra and the best way to shoehorn it into a roadster! If you have a look at the two links below you will see every modification I had to make.

Main Changes:-

4x4 sump needs to be replaced with a standard 2WD pan as the front final drive unit and probs run through th sump.

Close Ratio Gearbox exchange - I used a Capri 280 box (But some models had a pulse speedo drive) Also considering a hydrolic clutch

Bosch K jet fuel lines need to be extended with new braided lines

Alternator will not fit so needs mounting on opposite side.

Front uprights - I think you can use them, just the steel dust plates behind will be required. I but the new Rally Design ones I purchased side by side and they looked identical

Apart from that you get a cheap rear LSD, Cosworth spec parts and calipers!

PS, if you decide agaist using the 4x4 let me know, I wish I kept the old Sierra, but it had no interior.....!

The Geometry on the front of the 4x4 is a little different. Not sure if the uprights are actualy much different in geometry though. The Bottom ball joint from teh maxi may not fit though as the 4x4 uses a stub and pinch bolt as opposed to the maxi's threded taper.

I am using a 89 XR4x4 2.9 EFi, no need for all the fule metering stuuff from teh 2.8 MFi

I have an XR4i type 9 gearbox.

What year is your car?

Thanks for the information.

Not sure of the year yet, Off to see it next weekend and can get some more details then. So far I've just been told its a 2.0L DOHC 4wd Sierra, had to work the rest out myself!

Sounds like theres a bit more altering/more parts needed from using this car but the better brakes and other gubbins make it worth the effort.

I'll let you know when I've been to see/collect it!

89> For a DOHC ( not V6 ) and will be EFI.

There are no Seel sumps for DOHC's so you will have to MOD an ally one. Because of the design of the DOHC 4x4 sump, you may ge away with modding that ratehr than getting a 2wd one to alter.

I may be after a few bits for my XR if you do get it.

Cheers

Hi guys,

I've been to see, and bought, the car. I've got a donor vehicle!

I've also found out a bit more about it:
Ford Sierra 4X4 Ghia Estate
K reg (92-93)
2.0L DOHC
Anti-lock braking and all round ventilated discs

Unfortunately the interior is completely wrecked, it was used for storing feed at one point and the rats got in! (sorry Spikehaus) The bodywork is nearly perfect so if anyone needs some panels (Bonnett, doors, etc) in the south west then send them to me!

It will probably be easiest for me to simply swap the engine/ gearbox for a 2wd version (preferably working). So, again, if anyone knows a good place to start looking, please let me know.

All feedback apreciated, cheers guys

Not sure how soon I'll be able to start removing poarts as I can only do it when im home for a weekend. But if you'renot in any hurry then I'll see what I can do.

Assuming that they're no good for the roadster of course!

In that case I will let you know as soon as I've starting dismantling it.

Hi Oscar,

My interior was completly rotten and eaten as way as well, I found it on ebay for £130. It had been in barn for 7 years, then the owners son decided to strip it of its easy to remove interior parts! Still a cracking buy, got £450 back on the parts I did not use, and that excluding the body that I gave away.

If you need any help using or stripping it let me know.

Nick

PS, just noticed you are in Bristol! Maybe we can meet up when you get your build underway. We have a flat in St Annes so are up that way sorting the tenants.

Thanks for the offer, I may take you up on it!

I intend to start work on the Chassis around Christmas time, as soon as I've got the money for the steel! Being a student does have a few drawbacks...

When I start the build It'll mostly be done down at my Parents, they live on a farm in south Somerset. Plenty of room and tools, just need to avoid all the manure!
