i did my back plates this way as well took a while but very little effort i used an old babys bath soda crystals and a old battery charger

just put some of the soda crystals in the water and then conect the neutral terminal of the charger to the part you want to clean and then connect the positive to the metal electrodes i used old bits of 25x25 box section

I do that, it's good innit ? :)
I love the fact that it's busy de-rusting when I'm in bed.

We also aquired an old dishwasher from freecycle, it's nice to stick a sump in it and not get a rollocking from the missus ;)

I've used the technique a number of times - most recently to overhaul the front suspension on my MGB. On the really rusty stuff, it's a good idea to dip it a few times and then clean it with a wire brush in between.

When you're close to finishing, I'd say blast over the part with a wire brush in a grinder and then finally dip it again. A nice coat of rust inhibiting primer and then paint... the suspension I did looks lovely in nice hammered black finish :D

BTW, I think the article is on Locostbuilders about the best way to do this...
