CVH won't start!

Hi Everyone,

I'm having problems getting my engine to start...My setup is a 1.8CVH with ZX6R carbs, Bogg bros manifold, ZX6R fuel pump and Megajolt ignition.
The engine has been stripped, cleaned and rebuilt, the carbs have also been cleaned and rejetted.

At the moment I'm trying to get it to fire running with just EDIS in limp home mode but having no luck. The engine turns over fine both by hand and with starter. If you try starting with full throttle it comes close to starting with quite a bit of smoke, however if you put on the choke the engine emits loud bangs similar to a backfire and the air and fuel mixture occasionally hiss back out of carb trumpets.

All plugs are new, sparking correctly and have correct gaps, timing is fine, all ignition leads are new and are on correct plugs and fire in the right order, crank sensor wiring is okay as are all engine/head earths.
I've taken the carbs off and all inlet ports are wet, as are the plugs in cylinders 2,3 and 4 but NOT in cylinder 1.

I'm at a loss as what the problem is... does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Cheers,
Nathan

Pull the plugs and dry them at 100C in the oven

leave spark plug holes to elements to flash of fuel in bores.

Whilst they are out spin the engine on the starter in 10 second bursts of 10 on 20 off for 3 mins. (to fill up the tappets with oil)

Disconnect main fuel supply.

Buy some easy start

Test all plugs get spark

Refit plugs

Squirt 5secons of easy start past each throttle.

Try and fire engine, if it fires keep pumping in squirts of easy start.

If that does not sort it then the options..

1) your mechanical timing is out
2) your ignition timing is wrong ( chekc firing order)
3) your getting no oil preasure in the followers.
4) no compression

Thanks for the reply TT, I'll give your suggestion a go!

As for the lack of pressure in the followers, how is that fixed?

And what might cause no compression?

Cheers,
Nathan

after a full rebuild or long period ofidleness it may take some time cranking to get good oil circulation and fill the tappets. During this time the engine may flood with fuel.

Lack of compression can come from 4 options.

1) Stuck open valve
2) Leak between head/HG/block
3) Stuck rings or general bore wear
4) damaged casting ( head,pison or block)

I found my 1.6 cvh was a real pig to start in limp home mode. Once I had the megajolt connected and the timing was more advanced it started a lot easier. What jets have you got in the carbs at the moment?

He's got info to go on, it will run if theres snout drastic wrong.

it's been chopped a bit

but fuel + spark + air + compression = bang..

theres no snout we will get running.

Hmm...I might plug the Megajolt in and see what happens then :) I'm not sure what jets are in there, I cheated and got the Bogg bros to service & set them up for me ;)

twinturbo 13th October 2012 10:53 PM

boggs should have done a good job.

i think you have probably flooded before the valves have got oil in the folowers.

dry out, and test on squirty fuel ')

Haha! Well it's provided us all with something to do :) Thanks ayjay, it will probably be something pathetically stupid that I've missed.

when one finds oneself i a situation that is stressful, one should take stock, relax, re-evaluate, and prepare a fresh approach

only when natural resource hand ingenuity has been exhausted should one resort to medical remedy.

at which point consult a physician for the correct oinkment .

twinturbo 13th October 2012 11:04 PM

p.s.

if in doubt stick it back on the ESC-Hybrid

nath 13th October 2012 11:12 PM

Thanks for the help, I'll see if I can get this engine started or then again pigs might fly...

Cheers,
Nathan

It may be something like a por konection

Keep us posted, I hate non runnign engines..

At last it lives!!... Turned out after much investigation I'd wired the ignition coil pack the wrong way round from the EDIS module  A quick swap round and it started first time! :D

twinturbo 27th October 2012 08:31 PM

Thats what happens when you chop wiring.

Shank fully it was simple.

Good to know your up and running,

Tt

ayjay 27th October 2012 10:45 PM

glad to hear you got it going mate. They can be a git to start that first time. I had problems with mine as well using the same setup but it was a thrust washer on the wrong way round that stopped mine!
