2.0 Zetec sump mods.

Hi all,
About to start mods on my sump, 2.0 Zetec. What would the best thickness ali be to do these mods? I was thinking 3mm or 5mm. Am I correct?

Use the same thickness as the sump is made from originally.I would think 3mm would be enough.
If you are worried about it getting hit during use you could make a bash plate to cover it.

When I modified my aluminium sump, I cut a band out of it, and welded the bottom (complete with drain plug) back on. Didn't have to by any additional aluminium.

But to answer your question, while a sump is around 2-3mm thick, its also covered in reinforcing ribs. If your going to throw sheet of aluminium to make a flat bottom, I'd use 5mm.

Thanks for that, i was going to cut a band out but the guy who had the engine before me tried to modify it and basically wrecked the bottom, so I have to make a new bottom:D , 5mm it is then!!

any idea what amount needs to be removed (fiesta, escort sums are diffrent to mondeo)
my box is still in the sierra so it would be good to have the block bottom to sump bottom distence if any one has it :)

Get yourself one of these Shaun,

Waiting for mine to arrive. Was fed up with oil surges and foaming of the oil especially on the track. Bit pricey but a lovely bit of kit, got to treat yourself now and again.

Andrew.....;)

Here's the sump from the 1993 Mondeo 2.0, with the 15 cm waterline marked out:

For the Type 9 box, the distance from the centre of the input shaft to the bottom of the bell is about 155 mm.

Here's the mod I done to my 1.8 Silvertop Baz

Cut line marked out

Material removed

Job done

I worked out that I had lost aproximately 1/2 litre of oil capacity .... If needed, I could extend the rear of the pan, I'll see what the engine has to say first
