chassis number one
 

Well after 3 days of pottering around the work shop, buying some suspension brakets from ebay and a trip to my local sheet metal shop (former employer) I've built my first chassis. There's only one problem,just a small one, I can't drive the standard size car as I can't have my feet that close together long enough to drive it, I'm some what gutted!

I'm size 10 and I can use the pedals just fine. Perhaps if your brought the pedals forward more, so there is more width?

Have you actually got the pedals in there yet? Reason why I ask is that it is surprising just what one can manage even if trying the bare chassis seems very unpromising. I'd be surprised if your feet were bigger than mine and I can manage an Indy (though I have to take the seat out:o

I'm thinking about building my car some 100-150mm wider to fit bigger bucket seats and making the whole chassis taller by maybe 150-200mm. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and I can't have my back side at the same height as my feet for long enough to drive any where. Basicly I need the extra height under my back side so I'm not driving with straight legs. I drove my old mans Ron Champion locost for 3 mins just to put it on the back of my recovery truck and it was all I could take.
If there's any interest in very wide chassis for lard arse's like me or other big lumps v6-v8 I might make a build table for them. I know nothing currently being made off the shelf will fit but is'nt that half the fun of building your own car?

Have you checked out the McSorley designs, he offers various larger versions of the original Loscost design, but they are for live axle (sure you could sort that out, though).

I'd be surprised if there was much call for larger chassis, though. Some call, but not very much. Then there would be the problem of the bodywork, especially the nosecone. Luego were offering the Viento, which is like a scaled up seven, fit any enigne or person, but think I heard somewhere, could be on LCB that they might not now be available.

Regarding the height of seat thing, it would need to be done in such a way that the upper seat belt mounts were IVA height above the seat (taking the seat out for the test is not much good due to still needing headreasts)

I looked at the McSorley plans but as you say it's the live axle width problem, which you would'nt have with made to measure sierra shafts that Autograssers use. Regards the seat height I was planning to add 150-200mm to the height of the seat back uprights and tubes U1-8 pushing tubes tr8-9 higher and giving me more 'knee' room.

Consider putting in an auto,had this problem with a Chevron 7 years ago,I would never have gears anyhow!!David:)
