Talon front upper wishbones

Hi I have a set of talon wishbones to fit a TMXR chassis,
I’m using the mx5 front uprights so I’ll need a pair of ball joints to connect them.
The problems I’m having are,
1- which ball joints do I need?
2- the wishbones are threaded differently, one is M16 and the other is M14.
Is there a reason for this or am I missing something?

Hi on my Talon wishbones with mx5 uprights I used mx5 bottom ball joints
And BMW 3 series top, mine wasn't a Talon chassis so I don't know if the wishbones are the same.
Regards Mick.

Hi Mick,
Do the series 3 bmw ball joints have odd threads, which year?
Many thanks
Ben

The talon chassis uses ‘book’ wishbone bracket positions.
Did you have to team the uprights to fit the bmw ball joints?
Ben

Hi no my chassis is the book chassis with the Saturn alterations, it doesn't need any reaming it's the track rod end that you use, I don't remember the year but I think the 3, 5 series are the same but you will have to check.
Regards Mick.

Hi Ben

I have a tmxr chassis what your need is a pair of bmw 5 series drag link joints I believe the part no is FTR4112 first line. Bottom joints are mx5.

Cheers Gary

Hi Gary, those seem to be the proverbial hens teeth.
Nobody has any, FTR4112 is a track/tie rod end not listed as a drag link
however I did find these in Germany :

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m... 263691148981

I’ve been told they are the same, or there are Moog ES2047R items but I can only find them in US

The other problem I’m having is I have a wishbone with m16 thread and another with m14 thread. Should I just drill and tap the m14 to m16?

Hi Ben can't you take one of your wishbones to a parts dealer and try a track rod end, I'm sure that is what fits.
Well it definitely was for mine.
Regards Mick.

Hi,
Can't help you about the drag link, even if I would not be surprised that a drag link is be listed as a tie rod end: there is not much difference between these two kinds of parts.

Regarding the threads, just make sure of the pitch as well as the diameter. Drag links and tie rod ends often have fine thread.

For example, what we usually call just "M16" is a coarse thread: M16x2.00 (10 threads on 20mm=1 thread every 2mm)

But the corresponding fine thread for 16mm can be 16x1.25 (10 threads on 12.5mm) or 16x1.5 (10 threads on 15mm)

So check the pitch of your drag link, before re-tapping your wishbones.

Perhaps someone here who built an MX5 Roadster can tell us what it is?

Hope that will help :)

Hi Ben if you search the members section for k4kev thread there's lots of information there he says BMW E34 5 series 1988-1996 part VTR 325
You should check out Stot build as well his ideas are amazing.
Regards Mick.

Thank you all for the info , I’ll check out those posts
I have two tie rod ends on order with m16x1.5 threads I’ll check them before re-tapping the wishbones

M14x1.5 will only work if I was to mix and match rod ends, as the other wishbone is already threaded to take an m16x1.5
