I just pulled this fw drive engine out and installed bell housing and T 50 five speed box - stripped of unnecessary bits it is a nice slim unit . The starter motor and injection manifold is the widest area.
Total original car $200 Box & Bellhousing $50.Chassis cost so far $400.
Rear diff Nissan to have inboard discs.
Locally made nose, scuttle and front guards $550 in f/glass. (Rate 2 1/2 to the GBP.)

Nice one

Seen quite a few Toyota MR2's up at the breakers during my build.

They certainly look to be nice compact engine.
Been tempted to drag one out ..........A lot of work for an unknown engine

Well done on keeping your build cost so low :)

Toyota Engines

The Mr2 is a front engined drive unit installed directly into the rear- Perhaps like the MG-F.
While original parts are expensive from dealers - the reliability is superior to any other vehicles I have owned. (don't ask!)
Because the original engines were for Rwd vehicles, it is just a matter of removing the front drive gearbox, and installing an earlier bell housing and gearbox to a newer type twin cam ,fuel injected engine.
My present 1600cc 16 valve run-about does 800 kms a week, has no rust, and today will turn 423,000 kms.
Oil changes are from Aeroshell drained from Robinson 22 and 44 helicopter after 25 hours usage, and when I feel like it.

Happy welding, thinking, and building for 2010.

Finding a T50 (at a reasonable price) is the biggest challenge in the UK! I found one on a breaker search but they wanted £300 for it and £90 carriage.

I quite like a challenge so mines fitted to an MT75. Cracking engine.

With the weight of the roadster it will do roundabouts in third and on a private road will do about 105mph without changing gear.:D
