It won't fail, there are still plenty out there. I would advise spending more if necessary and getting abetter one. By the time you've paid out for everything, a couple of hundred saved on a donor will seem quite irrelevant. Get a runner and drive it for a while, find out if everything is working well, replace anything that isn't. That will be a good starting position.

Next potential donor is the E36 3 series BMW, but obviously modifications to the Haynes design will need to be made, and special parts will be needed also.

andyuk697 8th September 2009 10:02 PM

the search still continues....

is there any model or year of sierra that cant be used? or
is there a prefered model or year to look for do i need to look for one with milleage under a certain amount for eg 200,000
if i do find one come up i dont want to jump on the wrong one lol

thanks Andy

The 2L Pinto is quite a rare beast to track down. I'm using the 1.8 Pinto, although I would have also gone for a 1.8 CVH. Personally I'm not a big fan of the DOHC and MT75 box due to their size. My plan is to build the car and get it running with my 1.8 pinto, this also allows me to go for an age related plate. Then while hooning around in the car prep a C20xe to slide under the bonnet for a truly  experience

aerosam 9th September 2009 11:13 PM

How about buying any old sierra with a type 9 gearbox, and getting a 2.0 pinto elsewhere? Scrappie, ebay? Trawl the retro ford/capri/escort/sierra/granada forums and you should find a few good ones for sale.

andyuk697 24th September 2009 07:30 PM

can i use a 1991 f reg sierra or will it have wrong engine and box ?
what about a pinto with efi? can i use that engine

thanks Andy

richardk 24th September 2009 09:30 PM

What about this bad boy?http://retrorides.proboards.com/inde...y&thread=67902 go and get it , drive it back, if it makes it back to yorkshire its a good un !! Good price though.

Cheers

cool think its a bit further than i would like to travel tho
just missed out on one on ebay for £250 :( congrats if it was someone on here that won it

Andy

I wouldn't worry too much about the engine in the car, its not like you HAVE to use the engine. I'd concentrate on getting one with the right running gear and gearbox.

You can use any engine off the sierra and any gearbox. Its just that the pinto and a type 9 is the easiest to squeeze into a kitcar. In all honesty, the more you read about kitcars, you'll probably end up modifying your scope / design.

I decided to source my engine separately, because it will be a long wait for the perfect donor, plus I wanted a pre-cat engine as I think its easier to set up a carb engine than fuel injection / cat converter.

andyuk697 25th September 2009 06:48 PM

oh right so if i get a cheap type 9 gear box from one car an engine from another diff from another it wont matter?
do i just need a full car if im going for the age related plates from the car?
will it cause problems with the sva?
its all very confusing at first lol

Andy

HandyAndy 25th September 2009 06:54 PM

basically thats correct, as long as the parts are interchangeable then you can source from where ever for each part, it just means that as you can,t PROVE which car your component parts came from originally you WILL get a Q plate upon registration, some people think this is a bonus too.
tho it may help when you have your IVA test to be able to prove the year of manufacture of the engine so that the emissions test can be carried out to the rules of which year the engine is applied to, you can gain the info on the age of the engine from the engine number & contact Ford or someone like Burton power etc.
hope that helps a little.
cheers

andyuk697 25th September 2009 08:20 PM

thanks guys all info helps and it also helps others who read too

i spend hours reading through threads on here and find loads my head is swelling with knowledge lol

another question though should i stay away from later reg cars like 1990 1991 92 93 or can they be good for everything but the gearbox as i believe the type 9 was stopped being used in 1988 but i do i see pinto's in later years? will they be on mt75 box's?
can you fit a type 9 box on a dohc?

cheers Andy

HandyAndy 25th September 2009 08:50 PM

not sure where you got your info from but the later cars don,t all have the MT75 gearbox, tho my donor was a 1990 & had a 1.8cvh with a type 9 box so all good for the build.

cheers
andy

andyuk697 25th September 2009 09:28 PM

hi andy it was off www.zetecinside.com gearbox guide it says ....

The Type 9 was Fords first RWD five speed box, and based on the Type E. This gearbox is commonly used for 5 speed conversions on older vehicles. Some later versions were available with integral bellhousings, although they are more commonly found with removable bellhousings. A 4wd version of this box was also available for the early XR4x4 models. Power rating: Approx 200BHP

Fitted in:
Capri 1.6/2.0 02/83 on
Capri 2.8 11/82 on
Sierra 1.6/1.8/2.0 to 12/88
Sierra XR4i
Sierra XR4x4 2.8

im

I have owned, serviced & repaired many Sierras ( Both Own cars & customer ones )

I have never seen a MT75 box in anything other than the 2 Litre DOHC engined Sierra.

I do know that the last hadfull of petrol Sierras had either the 2L DOHC engine or a revised 1.6 CVH engine
These changes took place in late 91

Perhaps the dates given on the Zetec inside forum refer to the dates that the earlier, 4 speed, type 9 gearbox was last used.

Odds on, if you find a donor that is not a DOHC model, it'll have a type 9 gearbox.

I hope this is of some help :)

EDIT

My first donor was a 1991 1.8 CVH estate & was fitted with a type 9, 5 speed gearbox ;)

hi andy yeh its a runner its just out of tax and test tho so wont be able to give it much of a test drive

just finished the main part of the chassis i will be starting the rear next need another lenth of 25x25 tho and some round tube which i didnt order

Andy

HandyAndy 30th September 2009 11:14 PM

chassis almost done, donor on its way
you,ll have your chassis rolling in no time;)

if you are having a GRP rear tub you don,t need the round tube for the rear chassis frame, depends on what your plans are for bodywork tho.

good luck with the donor, a little tip..... undo the hub nuts on the rear wheels whilst the car is still on 4 wheels. ;)

cheers

hmm i havnt really thought about bodywork yet i think il go with which evers cheapest buy grp or make ally ones

thanks for the tip
i cant wait to get my hands thick with oil and graizes

Andy

HandyAndy 30th September 2009 11:49 PM

the only reason i mentioned the rear tub was that you said you intend doing the rear frame next week, so if you go grp tub you won,t need to buy the round tube,
all the best with your build & lets see some up to date photos:cool:

HandyAndy 3rd October 2009 08:44 PM

looking good there Andy, very smart indeed
tho may i mention that you have TT12 slightly in the wrong place, its the top rail of the transmission tunnel above the clutch pedal area. ( just untack it & move it towards the passenger side to line up with TR5), hope you don,t mind me saying.

yeah i noticed that when i looked at the pic but didnt notice on the chassis lol could have sworn it was in line
cant wait to strip it down any tips where to start tho?

thanks Andy
Andy

HandyAndy 3rd October 2009 09:08 PM

:o i,ll be honest & admit i didn,t actually strip my donor, fellow forum member "Flyerncle" did it for me, long story :D
one tip that gets mentioned alot is to undo the rear hub nuts whilst the car is still on all 4 wheels on the ground, they are left & right handed threads by the way.
enjoy the strip down , i ended up more or less just mopping the floor when my donor was stripped. :D

cheers
andy

Go to Tesco's and buy a large box of Quality Street for a fiver, eat all the choccies then put every nut and bolt and fastener into the tin, even if you don't think they'll be required. It will always be the one that you threw away that you need.
