Mx5 electrics

A couple of questions....:)

Which relay is this...?

And what the hell is this......?

Stot 17th March 2013 06:21 PM

The relay is for retracting the headlights so should be ok to remove/bypass.

The second one is a resistor pack to do with the Dip/Dim of the headlights. Again it can probably be removed if you remove all the other parts to do with it and plumb the headlights in directly.

Cheers

Cheers for that,:)
I spent ages looking at the wiring diagram for a 1991 Miata from Madracki.com site but the number and colour of the wires didn't match...
As for the resistor pack the wires trace back two a 2 pin connector which I don't know where it plugs in (been over a year since I started stripping the loom).:o

Looking on the net it seems to show a lot of wiring diagrams from across the pond and the location of relays and wire colours are totally different to what my car has got...
Originally I took out the obvious stuff,,,,,

1, Powered windows.
2, Heating system.
3, Rear demist.
4, Audio.
5, Pop up head lights.
etc....etc...

But I only seem to be left with three relays that were under the dash...
1, Open circuit relay.
2, Retractor relay.
3, Flasher relay.

Whats happened to all my others....
1, Headlight relay.
2, Horn relay.
3, Warning buzzer......
4, TNS relay...

I must be loosing the plot...

Can anybody help?
Are the UK cars so different?

I know the horn relay looks like this.

Don't know if this helps but shows where the relays are grouped together,

I think you must be Johno :D

The Madracki diagrams seemed to match my car pretty well (mine's an import, but there should only be minor differences between that and the UK model).
They're not the easiest diagrams to follow though, and Mazda put some of the relays in weird places which doesn't help!

Johno 19th March 2013 08:51 PM

This is a steep learning curve....
Thanks guys for all your help.

I found my horn relay today (left it on steel relay bracket under plastic cover labelled up as "block b" stashed away in my bench).....LOL:D
Under this black cover there was only the one relay but as Stot's diagram shows there are 3.....

After having a quick look on the net it seems the "retracta relay" can be under the dash (as mine is) not with the horn relay and the "dim dip relay" is sometimes removed so the pop up headlights don't work on just sidelights.

So under my dash I have the "flasher relay" "open circuit relay" and "retracta relay"...... and not forgetting the fuse box.

I think now all I need to find is my "TNS relay" and "warning buzzer" which I'm guessing will probably be in the boot and in the left door panel...:)

skov 19th March 2013 09:23 PM

I wouldn't worry about the warning buzzer, you don't need it!
I don't think it was always fitted, and I believe some owners remove it to avoid irritation!

What is the tns relay?

That's the relay that switches the tail and side lights. No idea why it's called TNS though

Well I think my donor car has been "tweaked" slightly...LOL
After serious amounts of head scratching I think my "Dim/Dip relay (is this the headlight relay)" has been removed.
The horn relay is on its own under the plastic cover but there is another terminal block that looks like it plugs into a relay but there is no relay...
I've looked everywhere in my scrap wiring bag and still no relay..
Then I found this on MX5 Nutz.com.

It was always my understanding that the dim-dip relay/resistor energises the dip/main beam bulb at a lower power (16%) and that there is no provision ex-factory for a wiring harness for sidelight bulbs in the headlamps.

Aaaaaahhhhhhh!!! Now it becomes clear! Ignore me and my stupid questions!! I've been and looked at the headlights today. They already have been replaced with H4 replacements. And I now see and understand the dim dip part of it. Should have realised by the name really!! There is no sidelight bulb in the headlamp unit, I don't need to replace them and it is just the headlight bulb lighting at a lower voltage!! I suppose if I'd researched it properly I'd have found that out myself!!!

Now I just need to find out whether she wants to keep the dim dip or whether she'll let me pull the relay!

Cheers for clearing that up, got there eventually!!

So I guess my relay has been pulled and the resistor pack is now redundant as Stot suggested....

Here's a photo of the relays found under the dash....

Notice the wiring colours and the loop connector.

In the engine bay I found only one relay under the plastic cover marked as LA10 I think and a connector just dangling there...

Is this all I should have? The wiring colours don't seem to match the "Madracki" drawings so hard to trace...

Can anybody help?

The yellow connector is the horn relay I think....
