dummy shocks
 

Hi guys,

chassis now complete im almost at the stage where i can get the rear of the chassis rolling( so i can pick up the front and drag it out of the garage to get some workspace). Whilst waiting for a few bits i was thinking of making a couple of dummy shocks. Whats the best thing to make them out of? i was thinking just a bit of left over box section with a couple of holes drilled for the bolts. Also could someone please tell me what the legnth of the shocks average out at, at say a road setting, just to get the dummies the right legnth to give me an idea of final ride hight.

100mm 4ins front and 130mm 5 1/2ins rear under the front and rear lower rail.

12ins ish centers for dummy shock 25x25 shs.

Best thing I would think would be jack the car up until it's the height you want ( the heights flyerncle has given sound ok to me) then simply measure the distance between the upper and lower shock mounting bolts. Then cut your tube to provide those lengths.

Remember that when you have your springs and shocks you will be setting the ride height by adjusting the spring collars until the height meets your requirements, so this way you are reversing the process, ie jacking the car up til it's the right height and measuring the distance between the bolts.

The usual theory with wishboe suspension is to have the lower wishbones parallel with the ground as far as possible.

I'd agree with Mr H. I did the 12 in struts got a pretty low ride (10 cm in the front). No biggie, but my 2 ton jack does not fit below the chassis to jack it up!

Heights were measured from a proven IVA'd car on the road that handle's very well and is fitted with easily available springs and shocks.

Its personal choice at the end of the day but the settings given are proven and a good starting point and tweaking here and there will give the desired results.

just made 2 dummy shocks for the rear from some threaded bar and tube i managed to 'aquire' from my dads garage, so i can mess around with the ride hight whilst building and until i buy some coilovers. Ill pass them on to anyone who wants them when im done with them.

which rails should I be measuring from ?

Measure from the floor to the bottom of the lower chassis rails 4ins front and 5 1/2 rear will give you a decent ride height then place a piece of 25x25 drilled to take a bolt between the shock mounting holes.
