Pro of a Q = no emission testing at MOT time:)

Nothing else on a kit anyway IMO.

if you have a q plate you cant swap it for a personal plate.

Afraid that information is a little out of date! It was once the case with cars registered before the SVA came in 1998, but since then its entirely changed. Emissions are set by VOSA during your IVA and thats what the car has to meet every time it has an MOT. Q plate issuing by DVLA has nothing to do with emissions.

Bit of an old thread to wake up perhaps but i'm looking into this at the moment so saves starting a new thread that might only get one or two responses.

What level of proof would really be needed to get the benefit of a new registration- are we talking receipts from major car manufacturers for each major mechanical part or would receipts from local engineering companies be likely to do the trick e.g; £ 1,000 for purpose made gearbox from XYZ Engineering, £ 1,200 for rear axle assembly from ABC Automotive etc. How close to the wind can this go ? Has anyone heard of someone being knocked back for trying this ?

Not true:

Only Q plate prior to SVA is visible smoke. After 1998(SVA) the the emissions requirement is that printed on the log book that was determined at time of SVA/IVA.
That's what the MOT test manual including the new one for 2012 says.

It's the same for Q or age related and since the IVA came in it relates to the age of the engine.

Basically there isn't really anything with regard to kit cars. It's more about what theyre built from and how well they're built.

As Ash says you can now transfer cherished number onto an age related but once a q always a q.

Age related requires almost all parts from a single donor type. Q will allow you to fit an alternate engine.
