How many Roadsters being built

I know this has been asked in a previous thread but that was back in Oct/Nov 2008 & it had a poll attached so i,m creating this new thread asking the same questions, but more up to date, so apologies if i shouldn,t start a second thread :o
as from discussions on the forum there appears to be alot of Roadsters being built so lets have a detailed poll

cheers

Its a shame we didn't put a build number plaque on them!
Was it ever confirmed how many were finished and on the road?

yes it would,ve been a nice idea that once passed sva/iva to be given a build number.
i believe there are 5 completed on the road Roadsters at the moment,
hope its ok to do this list.....

Chris,s
Frankie boy
Dogwood
Spud69
& of course Slimtater

have i missed any?

andy

slimtater 16th June 2009 09:43 PM

Actually, would this still not be a bad idea? I know the badge issue has been talked about and there is still some debate about a name.

What if I purchase either 10 or 20 engraved plaques with the following:

Haynes Roadster (or Chris Gibbs Roadster)
Number 001 (up to 10 or 20)

They can be issued in order of either completion (SVA/IVA) or registration, at a "cost price" - just need some proof.

Chris Gibbs 16th June 2009 09:44 PM

Mine's down at Haynes these days but when *cough* other things are finished, I'm going to build a car for myself, probably BMW E36 or MX5 based as that will help with a future new edition of the book.

Sunny days are agony when you don't have a proper car to drive :(

cheers

Chris :)

i think this is a great idea, tho the only down side i can see is, that in years to come will the person arranging/issuing the plaques still be within the forum/Roadster community, not saying that you wouldn,t be but who knows what happens in 1- 5- 10 yrs time, just my thoughts :)
i think from the current poll it,ll be a case of numbers in the 20,s
andy

slimtater 16th June 2009 09:53 PM

Perhaps to keep it exclusive, we limit it to the first 20? Or if soemone moves on, we hand over the baton?
Apologies for the thread hijack!

I actually quite like:

HAYNES ROADSTER

Designed by Chris Gibbs

Number 001

Edit - number 1 for the original car

HandyAndy 16th June 2009 10:01 PM

hey no its not hijacking the thread at all, its all about the same discussion, the number of Roadsters ;)
yes i think its a great idea, tho maybe Chris could step up & confirm the order of completion of the current 5 cars then take it from there????? would that be fair?
other marques have a build log number tho they are kits actually issued by them but some never get completed so by obtaining a build plaque only when registered is fair to all that it is a completed road legal Roadster.

now we,ll all be rushing to finish to get a plaque :D :D

andy

slimtater 16th June 2009 10:11 PM

Just remember my time from the RS Owners Club, the register kept of each marque was very helpful. Could something linked to the plaques be included in this forum? Perhaps a "completed car" section, listed in order of the plaque number, complete with a photo and brief spec. It doesn't need to have all the owner details as no doubt this could change, but it could be a database of the Roadsters.

HandyAndy 16th June 2009 10:21 PM

having sat here thinking about this i feel that ALL completed Roadsters should get a plaque, as its a heck of an achievement to complete the build, so if an exclusive aspect is taken on say the first 10 cars maybe their plaque could be a gold colour ( i don,t mean real gold) then 11 - 20 a silver colour then onwards a brass plaque, just an idea, i,m not trying to create a one upmanship status, more a case of in the future of years to come when folk look back on the history of the marque it gives information of the car in question.
i used to belong to a register of a certain motorcycle frame maker & this helped when looking at the development thru the years of the chassis(frame).

Slimtater.... i think the "log" of completed cars is a good idea, basically year completed & perhaps the builders name & plaque number.

what are other peoples views? after all this is a forum to all to have input on the passion we all enjoy.

cheers
andy

Chris Gibbs 16th June 2009 10:21 PM

Well the protoype was definately the first, then Slim's.

Frankie was next.

spud and Dave Dogwood will have to fight it out 'cos I can't remember!

(Actually I think Spud finished first :) )

I think it's only fair if this comes to anything we need to acknowledge Martin (Keenan) as co-designer.

Cheers

Chris :)

slimtater 16th June 2009 10:27 PM

Well I am willing to stump up for the initial cost of the plaques, and quite like the idea of the first 10 being gold, followed by silver for the rest - that seems to be fairly easy in terms of cost etc.

HAYNES ROADSTER

Design by Chris Gibbs & Martin Keenan

Build number 001

On a plaque about 2" by 1" unless bigger is better? Already found a potential supplier. :)

Tatey 16th June 2009 10:29 PM

Sounds like a brilliant idea to me. Where would the plaque be mounted?

HandyAndy 16th June 2009 10:36 PM

ok, even tho this is a forum & not a "membership club" how about someone be assigned as Marque Historian who can then keep a forum accepted database of cars completed ??? would anyone have an issue with this?

there is one draw back that i can forsee.....
maybe not all builders of the Roadster become members of this forum so the database may not give true figures of cars completed but only completed cars that the forum is aware of, after all the book is sold throughout the world & not everyone would join this forum, just me being aware of possible pit falls.
but am sure something could be done within the forum ????

i know one thing is for sure, when mines completed i won,t ever sell it, got 2 sons that,ll one day have it to enjoy  :D

A register of cars seems a good idea, not sure on the plaque idea as in years to come when calls get sold on will new owners want to know who built it, or would they advertise it as not their own? I guess these cars are never finished, in that there are always new engines to fit, styling changes etc.

Adrian

Accepted, but given the likely cost (< £5) for a small discreet plaque, and the fact that it just marks the achievement of the car being registered, then it can't do any harm? Not suggesting the indiviudal builders name, just the marque, designer and completion number.
I am willing to do this on behalf of the forum if there are enough wanting it.

Date of first registration for benchmark of who, what, when, where and why.

There could be data protection act issues keeping personal details, dont blame me but her indoors has just done a course on it and has been bending my ear about records I keep on customers and their vehicles and would hate someone to get grief for it.

The plaque is a great idea !

I'd be surprised if it was though......24th Feb 2009 mine was on the road.

Been smiling ever since.....Still need more power though, its surprising how quickly youget used to it...

Chassis is on wheels.
A few more brackets and details needed before I can paint it.
Fabby things bought so I can start the bodywork this summer.
Should be ready for the annual track day with handicapped children october 2010. Isn't that a good cause ? For this purpose, a by-the-Book Seven with a standard 2 liter Pinto should be sufficient.
Will do the occasional track day, sharing with my sons and daughter, but building the thing was the main goal.

The plaque is a great idea !

I am sure this can be worked around - ask her indoors to try Caldicott for challanging guidelines!

Wouldn't want to keep personal details to be honest - if we could have a thread/section called "Completed Cars" with just the builders/owners username, completion date, plaque number and a photo, then it will just be a log. If need be, it could be an admin only section so they add the post?
There would need to be some process of getting confirmation of finish/reg date for the plaques, but again, open to suggestions. I am trust-worthy and can provide references if need be! ;-)

HandyAndy 17th June 2009 07:30 PM

i,ll second Slimtater to collate the info/verification for the plaque allocation, maybe a copy of the IVA pass certificate, just so its shows the date of pass & builders name, so as no other personal details are shown,

would forum members be happy with that?

Close, but no cigar...1st Feb for me...Just checked my reg document.:p
And yea as you say it is suprising how quickly you get used to it.
I will be looking for more power come the winter....:D

David....No:3....(Well maybe)

I am not a number I am a Free man.....OOOOh I sound like "danger man"

"I am trust-worthy and can provide references if need be!
Solicitor,probation officer,personal officer ?
Only joking Slim, I wont ask her because she can talk underwater without O2
and forgets to stop, even in her sleep ! I really cant be bothered tonight.

It's still a good idea and who knows how long in the future the forum and original contributors will continue to contribute, bearing in mind "The new book"
we will have a new toy to make after the Roadster and I hope it brings as much dubious pleasure to one and all as the Roadster has.

Dont let Stevie Wonder proof read it Mr Haynes !

HandyAndy 17th June 2009 08:14 PM

wow upto 24 Roadsters in progress with 2 more starting shortly, plus the original 5,

best order some more plaques Slim

some of us that were at the Stoneleigh kit car show vowed to have our cars there next year so hopefully there should be at least 10 Roadsters on display in 2010, maybe even more, would also be nice to see the cars currently being built overseas at the show.

Would I still qualify if I built a live axle roadster?

Both sierra's and cortina's are scarce over here and escorts just don't exsist. Waiting on finding my donor before I decide exactly which way it goes.

(Budget says the cheapest donor I can find)

slimtater 17th June 2009 09:11 PM

First 10 gold
Second 10 silver
Third 10 - plastic or dyno tape lol!

fourth 10 = felt tip marker pen :D

on a serious note ...

is everyone happy with the suggestions that have been put forward so far ?
any other suggestions welcomed , as this is a forum , its open for discussion, is this plaque idea something that would be wanted by forum members?

andy

geeman 17th June 2009 10:15 PM

Well ill be building by friday if all goes to plan, however i disagree with the idea of plaques as i firstly feel that we may never know if people have built roadsters using this book and never saying a word on these forums, so we cant say for sure that mine is the x number roadster built as we cant be sure. Then we come to the point that many people who again have never been on these forums may have bought the book and used the book as a guide to building their car and not actually building it to te letter so to what extent can we call one of the car a haynes roadster. The idea of having plaques is actually quite good, but it wont be practical and may never be 100% correct.

slimtater 17th June 2009 10:35 PM

Perhaps it can be known as the Haynes forum plaque? I would find it difficult to believe that someone had bought the book and started building and not stumbled across this site.
"Merchandise" for this forum at present appears to be non-existent.
There are 1000 forum members. Plenty of people who join car clubs etc don't mind stumping up for stickers, badges, hats etc. I can't see how a couple of quid for an engraved plaque is any different? Its not as though it will add any value to the car.

By the way, yes, that is £2 - and I will give away the first 5 for free!

Tatey 17th June 2009 10:50 PM

Im all for the idea. However i do know someone who has nearly finished his chassis but never knew about this forum. I've suggested he become a member though.
