Recomend me a (car) engine

My dream of doing a R1 engined roadster is pretty much squit. It going to be tricky to get it through IVA, tricky to wire, and I just cant find one cheap enough:mad:
So, I think im going to go down the route of a car engine, summat like a pinto that can run on carbs, and be turbo'd at a later date if required? Oh, and pre-1995 so that it doesnt need a cat!
So, what are the likely candidates?

Getting something of that era to be reliable and hold together with a turbo will be expensive Jason. Fit a pinto or zetec,IVA and then fit something nasty and powerfull later.

I'm using a cheapo 1991 150BHP, stock, RS2000 engine. Its the same block as the DOHC sierra, so it can be put on a type 9 / mt75 with out any trouble. You can check in on some of the Escort Forums about the mods people do. Mostly throttle bodies or changing over to the 2.3 Ltr block. There are a few turbo'd models.

Ultimately it depends on how deep your pockets are.

easy choice here mate get a motor from an early mondeo/ escort pre 95. 1,8/2.0L silvertop add bike carbs and there you go 150+ hp simple
cheers les g
ps if you use the escort sump/baffle and oil pickup you wont have to shorten the sump
