Instrument Clusters

Im going to go down the route of buying parts instead of getting a donor as it seems to suite my situation a bit better.

I have a question regarding instrument clusters (IC's) e.g. speedo, fuel gauge etc.

Instead of using the Sierra IC, would i be able to use the IC from say a modern polo? How easy is it to wire up and will i run into any problems?

Cheers

Simple answer yes you will have problems with a Polo dash.

It depends on your engine and gearbox. You'd also need suitable fuel sender and coolant temp sender. The speedo would need recalibrating. It would cost twice as much in the long run to use a polo dash.

Im planning on using a 1.6 cvh from an XR3 escort as they seem to be really tuneable and 200bhp is very possible, with some people even getting 300bhp from it.

I am then planning on using a type 9 gearbox, does anyone know if i'll get problems with this gearbox and 1.8 cvh engine?

Which dash would people recommend for this setup? Im not too fond individual dials though.

I'll second that.

Unless you know what you are doing, you'll open up a can of worms that will end up costing you more in the long run.

You can fit a 1.6cvh to a type 9 using the standard bellhousing. Don't know about spigot bearings or suitable flywheel/clutch combo thou. Ask on Locosts as a couple of guys have 1.6 Turbo lumps (took some fiddling to get em to work) As for 200bhp...... You can tune the 1.6 turbo to around 175bhp with a few hundred quid. However according to Burton, a 1.6 N/A can go to 135bhp with a new head, cams and twin webers (so around £2000 according to Burton).

If your using a type 9 gearbox, its either a complete dash out of a car that had the same type 9 and diff, so the speedo works. Or more practically, for your building choice, a digital dash, with speedsensor mounted somewhere (wheel / prop)
