coilover covers

Would these be any good to get through the IVA 100mm radius test?

http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motors...coilover-cover

K4KEV 5th March 2014 11:51 PM

The actual shock itself is in an area that is not tested with the dreaded 100mm mushroom. The trapazoidal shape created inside of the wishbone frames is exempt.

CTWV50 6th March 2014 01:07 AM

Ahh I see! I had a vague feeling about exemption but could not recollect. Thanks.

flyerncle 6th March 2014 08:30 AM

Would stop £400 quids worth getting covered in kak ,good idea and practical solution.

CTWV50 6th March 2014 09:05 AM

That's what I thought, especially on the front. On another point though, if that area is exempt surely then there is no need to try and cut the side panel around the coil over and wishbone ends? Other than for aesthetic reasons?

CTWV50 6th March 2014 09:13 AM

Hmmmmm....

IVA Section 16 Exterior projections.

"Items within the volume enclosed by suspension components are exempt from exterior projection assessment."

"Where a vehicle consists of a frame structure or the surface has holes or sections without body panels fitted, all parts that are accessible with a 100mm sphere from the exterior of the vehicle are assessed against the criteria of this section, however where such items are deemed to be located within the interior of the vehicle, this section will only apply where they are located no more than 200mm from the outermost external surface surrounding the hole/gap and they are not an exempt item as listed in the Inspection Requirements of section 12."

flyerncle 6th March 2014 03:06 PM

I think if you read it and read it again it makes more sense (not) and is applicable to vehicles without bodywork that have sharpish edges that could be contacted or there again I could totally wrong.

I am fairly sure that area within the wishbone does not count and think Kev and I had the same idea pre his IVA.

K4KEV 6th March 2014 03:26 PM

yep correctamundo....remember you need some kind of locking device fitted to the bottom spring seat to stop in yurning, (the one you would use a "C" spanner on)

beardydave 6th March 2014 05:12 PM

Would a grub screw in the spring seat count for that?

K4KEV 6th March 2014 05:24 PM

probably....but I was concerned that it might weaken that point and make it prone to fracture, what with the forces that are on them

flyerncle 6th March 2014 06:49 PM

Gaz ones come allready drilled with grub screw in.

CTWV50 6th March 2014 06:53 PM

So........

Has anyone had a car through an IVA without panels in this area?

beardydave 6th March 2014 07:26 PM

Hmm, my Gaz shocks have just such a grub screw in the locking colar for the spring seat.

Perfect for mashing the threads when you forget to undo the grub screw when you try and adjust the height.

There should be a little nylon/delrin stub under the grub screw so that doesn't happen.

Cheers

I think it's just for aesthetic reasons. Our panels are like the ones fitted to westfields

As David say's. There is nothing stopping you placing something behind all the front suspension on the chassis to cover all the bits and pieces in there.

So have you just left it open? If it would get through IVA I wouldn't be bothered about covering it up.

Yes I'm going to keep them open and put some edge trim on the end of the panel.

Any photos to show how your build is progressing?

I will hopefully. Post something up soon. Just waiting for my cycle wings before the big unveil!

Well I'll be doing the same then with my panels.

Look forward to your update. My car looks pretty much the same tbh, I've been doing little IVA things. I plan on making everything I can that's on the car atm IVA ready before going any further.

Not strictly true - the top of the shock protudes out of the exempt area and has the potential for ball contact!
I stuck driveshaft gaitors over the top of mine:

Interestingly my adjusters don't have any kind of locking mechanism and they passed

All the photos I have are towards the top of album 3 down there in me sig.

It's worth investing in a polystyrene ball and a set of radius gauges off ebay - takes the guesswork out of what needs trimming and what doesn't :)

CTWV50 8th March 2014 12:07 AM

poly ball already ordered!

rpjg1975 8th March 2014 07:21 AM

I'm sure I heard somewhere that a ballcock is the right size

flyerncle 9th March 2014 11:06 AM

Do you have to lower the tone of the thread ?:p

I've got two of them somewhere, but they're a bit difficult to get into all those awkward positions without major surgery!

rpjg1975 9th March 2014 01:06 PM

Dunno but you should be a proud man if they are the right radius! :)

K4KEV 9th March 2014 02:30 PM

Wot 3mm:eek:

rpjg1975 9th March 2014 06:25 PM

I was thinking the size of a ballcock!
