Type 9 gearbox
 

Hi can anyone tell me is the type 9 4 speed gearbox the same size as the five speed box was going to position engine and gearbox to get engine mounts right
And wondered if the 4speed was any different in size as would like to fit 5 speed eventually.

I assume you mean you have a Type E, four speed gear box? A type 9 gearbox (5 speed) has a different mount position. the type 9 is slightly wider, but I believe the overall length is similar enough that you can use the same prop shaft.

Some people have an small adapter to reach the old gearbox mounts, others remade the mount to suit.

They are effectivly the same box with a different tailcasing to house the 5th gear. I don't personaly belive they are any wider.

most of the later ford 4 speeds are very simular in size you also hear them called rocket boxes (was actualy a suped up type e iirc) the type9 is almost the same but as said the back alloy half is longer to fit the fith in.

build wise the std book type9 pattern should be fine but you may need to move the mount point. you would also need a longer prop then a type9
