Finishing my car in a container....

How much of a pain will it be to finish my build from a 20ft container? I will need to get a small petrol generator for tools ect but part from that anyone know any other problems or issues i might have?

ventilation and possibly condensation, more likely if your working in there in the winter?

I hid my mates pick up in one once, he walked round the car park for over an hour before finding it :)

As bruce said but there is a paint formulated for shipping containers that stops them sweating. Without it they can really get some condensation going, to the point were you might be better off outside.

think it was david17 who built his car in a container it was white with a red stripe iirc

shipping containers are sealed and pritty much watertight
thay where floating about in the sea down here a few years back when that msc napoli dropped its guts in lyme bay

The V8 Files 8th October 2012 09:47 PM

Being watertight is exactly the problem, water cant get in and moisture cant get out, if your spending a few hours in there then just by breathing you will be creating a moist environment which could condensate down the cold walls resulting in a damp sealed box.

I didn't mean it as a major risk but it might be beneficial to add a couple of vents in it if possible.

Also investigate the paint Bob mentioned as that could help.

The problem is trying to find a place near where i live that i can make noise and work during weekends and evenings. Its going to cost me £100 a month to rent a 20ft in the same trading estate where i work. One coming up next month so need to find an alternative before then if pos.

The container would probably be fine with a couple of precautions, vents if possible but if its rented then that may not be allowed, keeping the doors open a bit while in there would help but heading into winter is going to be cold and let the noise out, you can also get moisture absorbers, just bags of crystals to help take the moisture out of the air.

if it helps we have 7 or so at work we use to store train parts and spares as store rooms all stay dry rain or shine and nothing goes rusty

I have got six in the yard and they sweat more than a aussie builders armpit:(
I was thinking of turfing them out and using the paint but they are stacked the the ceiling and its a mammoth undertaking. I reckon your better off seeing a local farmer to rent a shed.
