Quick release wheel and boss
Hi all,
Just wondered if anyone knew if I could fit a quick release steering wheel and boss before iva? The boss being the type that you weld on? I know the wheel I have will pass but it's just welding the boss onto the shaft and it being removable? Thanks |
Does anybody know the answer to this?

I was going to do this after IVA.

Reading through all the questions about this and it looks like i might have to borrow a standard sierra steering wheel for IVA.
To be honest though, id rather do all the mods once rather than pulling the car to bits again to fit a removable boss. The one i picked up is the weld on type to a 3 bolt steering wheel. Think i'll call the IVA guy for bishopbriges (Alan Burns) and ask him since thats where i'll be taking it. Any more thought? |

I decided to just bolt the wheel on for the moment and may change it at some point after the test. Be interested to hear what a testers view of quick release wheels are.

I see it says something about the steering boss failing, if fitted safely i don't see any problems using a proven design and quality parts. The likes of F1 and touring cars have been using similar for years. |
i have an old SWM QR, it's a boss kit that bolts to the sierra collumn
Currently on my sierra but will go on the 7 after IVA. TT |
I encounter QR steering wheels fairly frequently on motorhomes. The boss is fixed to the steering column by the same method as the original wheel, i.e. tapered splines or hexagon with a threaded portion beyond which a nut goes onto. The wheel itself is secured to the boss via three 6mm dowels and two retractable pegs to release it plus a keylock to securely fix it in place. The keylock should ALWAYS be used to secure the wheel to the boss. Just this saturday gone I submitted a motorhome for MOT with a removable wheel and it passed with four advisory notices, all wheel bearings. The tester was most surprised when I popped the steering wheel off in front of him.

Do you have the little keylocks in stock, we used to have one on our towhitch the same as the SWM quick release. Never seen them again.
