Steering rack brackets

Good evening Gents,

today I have made a bit of progress on the suspension and whilst working on the front end my mind wandered, as it does when you get to my age, doesn't it Ayjay.
It wandered to the world of the steering rack bracket, and how flimsy it looks so am thinking of coming up with a different idea.

Now to my question, is there an optimum hight from the bottom face of the chassis to the centre of the rack, I couldn't find anything in the book and I have left it over in the workshop so won't get to it until tomorrow.

kind regards

Arfon

95 mm, see drawing on page 75.

Thanks Alga

Any reason why box section can't be used ? As long as the outside diameter is the same, surely this will strengthen up the front rack bracket considerably ? I know that it will take longer to fabricate, but as long as the wall in the box is sufficient, it should work champion.

Have you seen this, Steering Rack Support Revised Drawing in book amendments.
http://www.haynesroadster.pwp.blueyo...ng_support.pdf

Fold a 3mm steel sheet to the same angle as drawing and weld front and rear.

TheArf 30th December 2013 01:26 PM

I was thinking of using Box section and having it in the same orientation as Janne's and either drill and tap some holes or mill some slots to bolt through

Two 5mm plates with bolt holes under the rack mounting fixes the flimsy aspect of it.

You'd have to incorporate crush tubes into the box section. Combine it with slots for adjustment, and it does not sound so easy at all. The alternative is to cut the tubes open and clamp to a single wall of the box section.

An alternative is to fill in the triangular sides, as Mopple has designed in his chassis Solidworks model: http://grabcad.com/library/haynes-roadster-chassis
The drawback of this approach is slightly impeded access to the clamp nuts.
Mopple's design is folded out of a single laser cut piece of 3 mm plate, if I recall correctly.

Hi,

I don't know if someone else here is using Madis (Mopple)'s modified steering rack support design, but I do, so I thought I could share some pictures.

I ordered the assembly directly from him (at that time, I paid 13 euros + shipment!), it consists of 4 parts : 2 sides, 1 top (90° bent plate), 1 cross plate.

I'm so glad I am using this revised design, it feels much safer than the book's design.

Here is the page of my blog about the fitting of this part on my chassis, with pictures.

Hope this can help :)

I am missing something here, why the crush tubes, the slotting is easy just not sure why the crush tubes.

Arfon

alga 31st December 2013 01:11 PM

I mean, you cannot just drill a hole through the box section and put a bolt through it, the tube will deform under bolt pressure and the rack will not be fixed solidly enough.

TheArf 31st December 2013 01:44 PM

That would all depend on the wall thickness of the box section and the animal swinging on the spanners

Hi Sylvain, I have had another look at the steering rack brackets that you have had and I like the design, do you have any contact details for the guy that made them

Arfon

mopple 23rd February 2014 08:49 PM

Hi,
I supplied those parts to Sylvain.
The drawings for those parts can be downloaded from here https://www.dropbox.com/s/koet0tnodl...20moppl e.zip. Any adequately equipped engineering shop can fabricate them.
Also I could supply them, but minimum batch size would be 10 sets.

Shorty 24th February 2014 12:23 PM

I wouldn't mind a set of those if anyone can supply.
Maybe get a group buy going?

Depending on cost I could be up for a set of them for my next build when I get my act together and get started again lol

voucht 24th February 2014 02:37 PM

hi,
Sorry I saw this post a bit late. Yes, Madis (mopple) supplied me this steering rack bracket, and it is top notch. If you can find more people interested in it, it is really worth it, as the price was OK too if I remember well.

By the way Madis, how is your build going?

TheArf 24th February 2014 08:18 PM

Hi Madis, thanks for the drawing, I will see if there are any engineering companies in the area that can produce them.

Kind regards

Arfon

mopple 7th March 2014 04:01 PM

Hi, a little update regards my version of steering rack brackets. I made an inquiry for 3 sets to a water cutting shop. Should get an answer from them at the beginning of new week. Will post the price for a set next week.

Regards,
Madis

TheArf 7th March 2014 09:45 PM

I will keep an eye open for it

Arfon

mopple 15th March 2014 05:53 PM

Got a price for mentioned 3 sets. It's 30£ for bent set + postage.

But the postage is trickery as it's 10£ + 1 £ for every kg of package. 12 £ for one set or 14 £ for three sets. So it would be reasonable to post the sets together for 14 £ to one addressee and then hand them out locally. Stoneleigh maybe?

If anyone is interested, then post post to this thread.

Madis

Shorty 15th March 2014 06:58 PM

Definitely me

TheArf 16th March 2014 09:10 AM

Yeah me too definitely interested

Arfon

vmax1974 18th March 2014 10:27 PM

Me too I can share postage with shorty

mopple 19th March 2014 10:41 AM

OK gents, I will order 3 sets from water cutters. Will let you know when they are bent and ready for shipping.

Shorty 19th March 2014 11:17 AM

No problem. If they are ready before Stoneleigh I can take them down or drop vmaxes on the way if you not going.
Mopple. Just let me know the total cost and where to send the payment.
Thanks

voucht 19th March 2014 05:01 PM

Madis,
Did you get my email? Please PM me if you come this week :)
Thanks.

TheArf 19th March 2014 07:53 PM

When they are ready let me know payment details, shorty, would it be possible for me to arrange to collect mine from you at Stoneleigh, then it will make it easier all round rather than delivering all over the place. Hope i am not overstepping the mark

Arfon

Shorty 19th March 2014 08:01 PM

Yeah that's fine. No problem at all

TheArf 20th March 2014 08:37 AM

The brackets are done https://www.dropbox.com/s/qy0yh33002...2011.24.10.jpg, vmax1974, Shorty, TheArf please agree to whom I will send them and then I will PM you with payment details.

Madis

vmax1974 23rd March 2014 09:36 AM

Send mine to shorty and I will get them whenever I can not in any rush

TheArf 23rd March 2014 09:36 AM

I think the logical way would be to send them to shorty as he has agreed to bring them to stoneleigh, so i now need a way of paying you young sir, if you want to p.m. Me with the details i will get it sorted

Many thanks

Arfon

Shorty 23rd March 2014 09:37 AM

I'm happy to receive and sort out passing them on.

TheArf 23rd March 2014 10:02 AM

That's great mate

Arfon

TheArf 28th March 2014 08:26 AM

Hi Madis, you should have a p.m.

Arfon

TheArf 29th March 2014 04:36 PM

Hi Madis,

can you check your pm's again

Arfon

mopple 1st April 2014 12:34 PM

Shorty, TheArf and vmax1974 please check your PM-s.
Sorry about the triple post, it was some kind of software glitch.

Shorty 1st April 2014 01:00 PM

Thanks very much.
If you guys could let me know your contact details to arrange passing them on.
I will be going to Stoneleigh on the 4th (Sunday) but I will be staying in a hotel so will still be around on the Monday morning if you weren't going till Monday.

TheArf 2nd April 2014 08:56 AM

Hi Shorty, pm sent with contact phone number
