Engine number

Unable to do any work on my build for the last few days, I have been drawing up a mental to do list.

I remembered that when I was cleaning up my Zetec engine, the engine number was no longer visible.
Looked on the usual surfaces where it would normaly be located & nothing to be seen :(

What do you folk think my best option would be !!??

I have a copy of the donors V5C & am 99% sure that the engine is original ( Former long term customers car )

I have a set of number.letter punches but obviously they are not going to be the right font & the IVA examiner will know that the engine number has been re-stamped, is this likely to create problems for me ?

Take the engine to my local MOT centre to get them to re-stamp it for me & get myself the relevant documentary proof.

I have wondered if the Bar code still visible on the front timing cover contains engine number details, if so would it be best to take the engine to a Ford dealer to have the number re-stamped ?

What would you guys sugest, the last thing I want to do is throw a spanner in the works when it comes to the IVA test

My engine number was on the back of the head near the thermostat housing, if you do restamp the block have a look at one in the scrappers, they usually start and finish with an asterisk. Having said all that my IVA man didn`t even check mine was on the engine let alone read it!

Dennis.

Thanks Dennis :)

I did look on the head as a last resort, all to no avail, also checked the usual casting web near the starter & on the LH side of the lower block.

On the lower block, I can see a faint trace of where it originaly was ( I think ) .... Tried the polishing & photograping trick but can't realy make anything out.

Not a bad idea of yours, looking at one in a breakers, I know the number was probably etched with a series of dots.
I guess if I found a suitable font & the correct format, I could print a template & use my automatic centre punch to re etch the number.

Cheers :)

I recently bought a 2.0L(mondeo) and 1.8L(escort) silvertop at the same time. I bought the 1.8 for the flywheel pump etc. The engine number for the 2.0L was stamped on the gearbox flange on the exhaust side but the only stamp I could find on the 1.8 was on the head at the back. Eventually however it turned up on the casting behind the starter motor. I think that's on the exhaust side of the engine.

I'm guessing the head is stamped because the original number was concealed by the starter. None of the three I have had recently have had any asterisk in the number.

Mine was extremely faint on my original engine but i left it alone rather than re-stamping

The dvla inspector said if i had re-stamped it it would have been an automatic Q plate

May give them & vosa a ring and ask for what kind of evidence you would need with regards to an honest re-stamp

If they tell you want you want to hear ask for it in writing!!

Because you can guarantee the next person you speak to will contradict everything you have already been told

Thanks guys

Thanks for the help chaps, plenty of food for thought there :)

Mark

That is some wise advice

I really don't want to be lumbered with a Q plate, that said, it won't be the end of the world if I do.

Expect when the IVA & regisration time comes, i will be happy to get all of that malarkey out of the way.

Just trying to avoid making a silly mistake now & paying a heavy price later  :(

I Have no engine number on my block, I was going to restamp it.
I was under the impression the the Dvla issued the plate be it age related or Q and it had nothing to do with the IVA:confused:

Its engine age you have to prove at iva so the only reference you have to prove this is the engine no.

Do they not have the year cast into the block?
