Steering rack question

I'm sure this question has been asked many times is it only the escort mk2 rack you can use? I can get one but seem to be 130 plus just for the rack then I got extensions, track rod ends and brackets to buy potentially 200 quid ish! Is there a rack that can be modified I know iva won't allow for a steering component to be welded.

Any rack can be used if it measures up, the Escort is used as its fairly common and easy to get parts/adapters for, and it fits in the gap nicely. If you're loooking at a different rack the important dimension is the point where the TRE's pivot, p75 shows you want it to be as close to 533mm as possible. (Escort is close but would need modifying to get spot-on)

I got my rack 2nd hand off the bay for 40 quid, news ones sometimes come up at around 80 + postage. At 130 you're probly looking at a quick rack? (2.4 turns vs 2.9)

Re mounts, I went for standard retail mounts, much cheaper than ali ones and can always be changed at a later date.

As always, the answer to your question is anything possible, just how much d'you want to modify? (And never be afraid to ask questions!)

I am still waiting to see if someone can get through IVA with comedy back to front steering. Using a rear mounted rack ahead of the axle line won't work "correctly" and most modern FWD cars use racks rearward of the axle line.

OK, so I didn't think of that.

This is the importance of asking openly so you get lots of response and can weed out the idiots like me.

The rest of what I said was right though?

As I mentioned before - try LHD Fiat Punto Mk2 steering rack... cheap and available ;)

I still don't know what are extension dimensions, but it's nothing difficult...
