Moving a SORN donor 5 miles?
 

What would be the cheapest legal way to move a SORN Sierra 5 miles. I have a tow bar on my car but I am not sure what the legal towing capacity of my car is. It is an Audi A6 2.4. Can I hire a trailer and tow with my car or do I need to ring a tow truck etc?

Legally you can't tow it on a rope. Aslong as its not touching the road ie on a trailer then your fine. But 5 miles is a very short trip if you get what I'm saying. tow trucks are going to be expensive I would have thought

i know people that have on several occasions towed non tax'd, non-mot'd cars with another car from gatwick to dover without any trouble. they accidentally tape the on tow sign in a way accidentally covers the numberplate so the anpr cameras dont cop them.

how ever you do it make sure the number plate is covered even if its on a trailer as the anpr cameras will send you a nice fine.

I did say legal hehe, There are no cameras from there to here, all a and b roads and its less than 5 miles but my luck I would pass a mobile tax stop thingy or something. Would my car be legal to tow a sierra on a trailer?

A frame , trailer or recovery truck. Are the legal options.

Your Audi handbook should give you the maximum braked trailer weight for you car.

If you have insurance cover for it perhaps you could book it in for a test near to the location where you wish to move the car too.

You do not need to have Road tax or MOT to take a vehicle to and from a MOT test.
I believe the same rules also apply if you wish to move the vehicle to a place of repair. ;) ;)

If you have a mate driving a couple of mins ahead of you he can be your spotter

I have towed a shed load of cars to the breakers with my A frame.

Also some long distance trips as well.

Rover 400 from Birmingham, Vauxhall corsa also from Birmingham. Ford fiesta from Swindon. Triumph vitesse form Dorset.

All of them all the way to cornwall. All with exeption of the fiesta had no documentation.
Passed dozens of Patroll cars & plenty of ANPR cameras. No interest shown by any of them. :) :)

I bought my Mazda down to Cornwall from Essex on a trailer behind my Citroen BX estate. That was a bit hairy. :eek: Bloody 22hr round trip :o

I only have one mate :( so he would have to be in the sierra stopping it from running into the back of me :D

Befriend a farmer, Then have him lend you a tractor with a loader and a trailer... Lift the car onto the trailer, then dump the car at yours, then return the tractor and trailer!!
Alternatively, whats your network of backroads like??
