Windscreen

Thinking about the future (when I have built the car and had it IVAd) and a windscreen, does anyone know if any caterham/westfield screens fit the haynes scuttle?

Did you get that one that was on ebay recently? That's the reason I asked, I've been watching one that I think finishes tonight or maybe I've missed it.

rpjg1975 27th May 2015 12:39 PM

I got a Robin Hood screen which I am actually going to sink into the scuttle slightly to get over the slight difference in the profiles. Bit of a work it out as I go along but I have a plan......how hard can it be? :D

Hi Dubzter, no I joined the westy club really welcoming and all 7's welcome, spoke to a couple of guys on there who gave me the sizes and put a wanted ad but postage is the problem so.... bit the bullet and ordered a new polished frame one from westfield £240 all in shhh, but the price includes a shipping box so hopefully be ok, post and vat. if looking for one make sure you get a wide one.
once I get it I will take some trial fit pics etc so all can see whats required.
rpjg, would it not be easier to wrap the bottom of the screen with some thin plastic and make a fiberglass fillet onto the scuttle, this can then be feathered into the scuttle top profile front and back of the screen this then leaves the integrity of the scuttle as is also you have clear space underneath for demister vents/ ducts wiper mechanism

Nice one Gary, look forward to seeing how it pans out.

I'm pretty sure that Westfield also do a heated screen which eliminates the need for a heater. I'm sure to was about £500 though

garyt 28th May 2015 10:10 PM

yes they do , they had one on the shelf and I considered it for a nano second £mega cant remember the exact figure quoted , I was in shock so decided to wait for the un heated .
Although by the time you add in a heater, ducting vents etc it starts adding up but at least you can spread the cost :)

dubzter 29th May 2015 09:24 AM

heater and vents are only really required for IVA, if you fit it after then no need for them.

baz-r 29th May 2015 12:51 PM

if you have a saturn/fabby/nts body you will find the angle of the sides of the scuttle do not lend them selfs to fitting a screen as the the bottom of screen will end up too narrow
the haynes is very wide in the chassis way wider than a westfield wide body
i have a screen with the right width and tapper to match the chassis, what im going to have to do is make up infill bits to fill the void!

K4KEV 29th May 2015 02:01 PM

My solution has yet to occur but it will be a very close fit once done it only needs cutting and tigging back together the right width...I suppose it could even be riveted back together it is off a spartan kit car

well it finally arrived today ! a wide westy screen, so opened the box and with Trinas' assistance we tried it on the scuttle and quite pleased a small amount of reshaping on lower corners of the screen surround, and the lower section of the supports to bring them in a tad at the bottom , make a fillet up..... sorted not as much work as I thought so pleasantly surprised :) will be a couple of nights before I can get back out there :( and will add pics of before / after fitting

SeriesLandy 22nd June 2015 08:20 PM

Glad that it's turned up now. I was thinking it had been a while yesterday as there is one for sale on LB but it's a caterham screen.
Can't wait for some pics.

What scuttle have you got? I'm sure it wasn't a Saturn one.

dubzter 23rd June 2015 08:23 AM

Looking forward to the update Gary

As I got a flyscreen for the GBS Zero GT (wide body), and it fitted very well on my scuttle, I'm pretty sure that their windscreen kit (available from Kit Spares) also fits the Haynes (the GBS zero GT's dimensions are very close to the Haynes', if not exactly the same)

Problem is the scuttle profile. I think, if I had to go the GBS route, I would order the glass separately to a glass manufacturer/supplier, and have it cut to the exact profile of my scuttle, and use the rest of the kit from GBS to fit it.

Please keep us informed of your progress on that matter, I'm very interested, as I'm also considering that (but need to save money first :) )

ok folks here we go, managed to sneak out tonight (couldn't wait really)
so here we go first the screen corner as it came and then reshaped, then uprights before and after then fitted, still need to make a fillet for the inside of the upright at the lower edge of the screen and get some T shape rubber seal

so to recap I have a Gillham / Saturn scuttle and I've used a wide westfield screen.
I have had to reshape the lower corners of the screen, and reshape the inside lower face of the uprights, as mentioned above I am happy with the fit along the scuttle in as much I will not need to make a fillet, just some T rubber seal, I will need to fill the inside front edge of the uprights though.
Next are some wipers, again waiting for a set of westy ones (2nd hand) then I can get the wheelboxes positioned / fitted, A '72 2 speed mgb motor and drive fits and works with the mx5 harness. and the demister vents to be fitted :)

dubzter 24th June 2015 08:24 AM

Nice work Gary, guess that answers a questions loads of folk have asked in the past. Looks good.

Ianr 24th June 2015 04:12 PM

That looks a really nice job Gary - looks like I have to start saving :)

rpjg1975 24th June 2015 04:53 PM

Definitely a tidy job, looks the part. eBay prices for westie screens will be going up!

garyt 24th June 2015 08:53 PM
