Toyota W55-59
 

Hi All,

Does anyone know if the Toyota W(55) series gearboxs fit into the standard book tunnel?

I have picked up a completed frame and looking into trans options

Does not look much different in size than the rest of the boxes used. Like anything else with these cars its all possible with a bit of re engineering.

I will take some sizes of my W58 box tomorrow and post the results then. The box is a bit on the wide side though but not much...

You are using this in your build right?
I havnt had the time to study your build in detail (which I want to do, as from what I have read, is amazing) but with your stretched frame, are you keeping the standard tunnel, or is that getting a nip/tuck also?

I have the option of buying a W55 or J160 for (what is at this stage going to be a 3sge build) similar price, however the J160 is about 20mm thinner around the gear stick end, which from what i can see, (all else equal) going to make things a little easier to fit.
Your thoughts? : )

James, you are right and the W58 is going into my car coupled to a 3SGTE engine which I am now in the process of reconditioning. The reason I stuck with the W58 is the fact that it is plentiful in my country and it is rated to handle 230hp safely as stated in the box specifications of the link I provided you with. My engine std makes 225hp:)
The W58 is a firm favorite in SA for light truck conversions and replacement for the weaker Isuzu box (and others) and also when bigger engines are installed in cars/trucks the W58 box is king.

The tunnel width is still std at the engine side but greatly reduced inside to get the sports seats fitted and still the W58 slips in with space to spare. There is a section in my diary of this change and the amount I removed.

As for what box to use, that is your decision alone my friend but to help you decide, here are two links where these boxes are discussed. I am not on speed on the J160 box....

Both have their good and bad points; so as I couldnt decide (and still cant) I got them both - they were too good a deal to pass up.
Evan (7ish) and Aaron (nz_climber) both run a J160 in their roadster's behind 3S's

As they are both gearbox options for a 7 I think it is a good idea to have pics/dimension of both in the same thread, as it was pretty hard work trying to source measurements off the net for both. In the future, someone may just be in the same boat as I was/is
