New guy with big ambitions.....
Well i bought the book and registered here a few months ago now! Looking at getting down to business in the next few months :) Have spent countless (and i do mean countless) hours researching, reading and reading some more!
Having not started i was trying to work out what would be best for me vs what i wanted from my Roadster! The idea being for these cars best i can tell is that they are a personal item built to each and everyone's own choices and tastes!
So with all that in mind i have decided that i will most likely be using a Sierra donor coupled to a zetec motor! I would love to start with an MX5 donor but i understand there is a fair bit of engineering required for the rear in terms on suspension and diff mounting!
The other reason for sticking with the Sierra is that i would prefer to buy my chassis pre cut! Some would label me a wuss, however i simply dont have the space to store and cut etc so buying a precut just makes so much more sense!
So i have a couple of n00bish questions...
Type 9 GB i understand is the standard Sierra GB but when i order i need to state Type 9 or MT75?
Where does the MT75 come from? Is this the mazda or a different type of Ford box? If i is how do i tell them apart?
Do i want an MT75 or a Type 9?
Anyone close to Milton Keynes that would want to give me some welding lessons? :D
Type 9 is the older style sierra Gearbox and MT75 is the newer style sierra gearbox found in the likes of the 2.0 dohc models.
Welcome to the forum
So visually how do i tell the difference?
Easiest way is to check where reverse is - top left is a type 9, bottom right is an MT75.
This is a type 9 ( or see my build pics in my signature to see my type 9)
Here's an MT75 (I think!)
Cheers for the info David cleared that up nicely for me :)
Although having flicked round ebay and autotrader for a donor Sierra they apear to be coming hard to find! I find that odd!
This could get complicated!
Keep looking on ebay as they do appear every know and then, also keep your eye on the forum as they get advertised hear as well.
Hears one being advertised on the forum
Cheers for the heads up shame its a bit early for me and in the IoW but i will keep looking as and when :)
Having had a scoot around here i think i will try to go for a type9 having read the the MT75 cuts out some room for the pedal box which looks tight already!
A warm welcome to the forum, best wishes for your build. :)
Don,t dismiss the idea of using the MX5 as a donor ;) ......
I,m ex MK so know the area well, quite a few builders within a 50 mile radius of you too, I,m sure there,ll be a few members saying hi to you soon.
i think i have virtually got a whole donor sitting in the spare shed at the moment.
type 9 gearbox
front and rear brakes
think the only things i havent got are the front uprights and the steering column.
nothing is up for sale at the moment though as i want the car back on the road before i let anything go.
Don't be put off by a cvh, I was (things written on the net) when I was looking for a donor and passed a few up that were close. It's easier to use the motor if you eventually want a zetec engine.
And welcome to the forum.
