So, I started with my table
 

Hi Guys,

Well I had a very nice weekend. I finally started with my build table - about 4 months too late. It's 21 mm shutterply to be fastened on to a 38X38X2mm steel frame.

The frame's welds look like #$%^ - all over the place. Have'nt MIG welded in 5 years and am struggling to see what I'm doing. Got the bacon frying pan thing pat down but just can't see where I'm going.

Discovered on Sunday my cheapie auto dark helmet even on setting 13 does not help. Dusted off my old non-auto helmet and it proved to be much better but I'll try to find a lens that can even filter more of the brightness.

Cannot afford a new helmet now.

Oh, and my 7 year old son had a go - he was so chaffed with his first bead altho it looked like bird poo. I showed him how a good weld looks like and that he must slow down. Eventually had to chase him away to get some work done.

I do like your welding cart so much better than carrying the thing around the chassis like I had to.

I had the same experience when I started welding again after a while of but it soon comes back. Having a bash of Ash’s welder helped to reminded me of how it should feel I then went home and ramped up the volume and have not looked back.

Getting back in the garage tomorrow after a little brake.

Don't beat yourself up about the welding, it'll soon come back to you.

A couple of years back, i was wondering why the heck i was having so much trouble seeing what i was doing :confused:

After a couple of screen changes & no difference !!?? It dawned on me that if i now need glasses to read, i probably need to wear them when welding ....
To be sure, it made a world of difference :D

Cool, the first step has been taken :) Be warned, it can get addictive.
Get yerself some scrap to practice on and the welding will be fine after an hour or two.

I'd strongly recommend a decent visor. You'll be doing a load of welding and a cheap visor will be fine for doing the chassis. I built mine with a £30 job off ebay and its wonderful.

Its good to see more people getting started on the cars :D We'll have an army of Haynes Roadster soon :eek:

go and buy the best visor you can afford if you cant see you cant weld simple as that. you are doing safety critical welds on a chassis that will be hurled round tracks and down country lanes. Is it worth your life to half ass it?

Ginge, that trolley is a work in progress!! Started with it in ... October 2009 .. still not done!

Bonzo, Enoch - when I cut and tack that first batch of tubing for the bottom rail, that's when I officially starts.

My helmet is a little bit worn out now, it's 8 years old. Still does the job though.
