2l Pinto EFI

Evening,

If I purchased this

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FORD-SIERRA-GH...item3a53bbf8ed

would converting to carbs be as simple as I imagine, ie plenem and all the injection Paraphernalia off and carbs on?

Gentlemen I am off to bed and will look forward to reading your considered opinions in the morning.

Cheers Ginge

Not compleatly straight forward then, I supose I could keep the EFI on it, it is just ECU's scare me a little.

Rapidtornado thanks for the link.

I have the same engine and have fitted bike carbs and left the injection ECU in place to run the ignition timing. The car is not on the road yet but the engine runs well and the ignition advances with the revs.

The theory goes like this....

the EEC IV ECU is a very basic ecu and the ignition advance is controled by the revs on the throttle position sensor (so you need to get carbs with a TPS).

All other engine sensors on the pinto such as the airflow, air temperature sensor are to control fueling which is independent from the ignition advance.

You will also need a low presure fuel pump to run the carbs and probably a presure regulator to run carbs a 2-3 psi.

I have modified the efi loom and only left the TPS and oil pressure sensor all other wires for mass air flow, air temperature, idle control and injectors have been cut and well insulated.

The ford advance curve in the ecu will not be ideal but I should get the car on the road with it and I plan an upgrade to megajolt later.

MegaJolt will run ignition timing with custom maps for ignition advance and pc conectivity but you would need to replace the dizzy with edis and fit a trigger wheel for a crank position sensor.

Another option which I have looked at is a bestek ignition system (search on ebay) which replaces the dizzy and coil it seems to produce good results but has little or no scope for custom maps or pc tom foolery.

Hope this helps

Andrew

OZZ

Does it help? does it ever. Thanks

I shall print your reply and digest it later in conjunction with some internet research.

You may find the efi inlet plenum will stick up through your bonnet, and it's shape isn't IVA friendly.

I put one of those engines in a Capri some years ago, don't be scared of the efi system, it's really quite simple - just be careful when you strip it down, try not to cut any wires and label label label everything.

If you do want to go carbs - the electronic dizzy will be fine - it's not controlled by the ecu, Ford didn't put fully mapped ignition in these early systems - the DOHC was the first to have it. This system works the other way round, using the ignition as a datum to time the injectors. In know plenty of people in the classic ford scene who have replaced their points dizzy with one - you just need the module with the thick ally plate on the base - but that comes with the donor anyway.

The only concern would be the inlet ports, they are egg shaped to allow the injectors to fire cleanly into the top of the port. However i've seen loads of these heads with twin DCOE carbs fitted with no problems, just use a good quality gasket and trim it to fit the port shape. It's a much better head than earlier carb heads - better gasflow, hardened valve seats, better cam etc etc

best of luck! give me a shout if you have any more questions!

I have done over 10k on mildly manipulated EFI, very cheap to do, totally reliable, can be stupidly economical (65mpg) and quick enough to scare Bonzo!

Trophy Blue,

Now that looks tidy, the picture gives me real inspiration (for any engine). I have decided to heed the advice of many and wait for the right Sierra to come along instead of chomping at every 2l or 1.8 I see, I have time.

Cheers for the pic.

Yes I can vouch for that :)

Lets just say, I found out that Adrenalin........is Brown :D :D

The mods made to that EFI engine has taken my ingine install to a new level ;)
