warning water is dangerous!!!

just a little warning to everyone. dont try and run your car up to temp without making sure you have a bead and good hose clip on all your hot water pipes. today one of my pipes burst off with the water temp at plus 100 degrees. resulting in two silly forum members with third degree burns and 2 good shots of morphine and a trip for gingea1pom to east grinstead special burns unit.

here are the picts ginge actually has no skin in his neck or arm

be carefull guys

HandyAndy 19th November 2009 11:22 PM

 blimey, ouch

i was going to say, at least you,re both ok but looking at that pic it seems the wrong thing to say.

andy

AshG 19th November 2009 11:28 PM

lets put it this way. i will never moan about sun burn again. i cant even think about how much pain ginge is in cos my hand bloody kills and i didnt lose even half the skin that ginge lost.

he has got a pict of the uncovered burns on his phone im sure they will be posted at some point. i never thought skin could look like it was melting and falling off.

AshG 19th November 2009 11:34 PM

the water was so hot and under such high pressure that it actually burnt through our clothes and took skin off.

HandyAndy 19th November 2009 11:38 PM

how are you both smiling? or is the morphine still active?

that is one scary day you,ve both had:eek:
i can only imagine the feeling of such bad burns,

andy

AshG 19th November 2009 11:43 PM

well we lived to tell the tale ginge went into shock as we arrived at the hospital. everyone moans about waiting hours at a&e. tonight we couldnt have faulted them. ginge was on a bed being assessed and treated within 60seconds of arriving at the desk.

i know they will prob never get to see this but i want to say a big thankyou to the staff at medway hospital they were great in our little crisis.

HandyAndy 19th November 2009 11:55 PM

full respect to the staff at your hospital,

what time did this happen Ash?

best wishes to you both for your recovery from this horrific accident.

andy

AshG 19th November 2009 11:58 PM

happened about 6:30 was at the hispital by 7:15 after one of us being under a freezing cold shower and the other under the hose in the garden. i feel real bad for ginge cos he got the worst of it. i escaped with my hand and knee where as his whole arm got it and the side of his neck

whats more crazy is that we fitted the pipe together tuesday and both agreed it shoud be fine. today it bit us in the ass.

so remember guys even if pipes with a proper bead are a bit more expensive they are worth it.

gingea1pom 20th November 2009 12:05 AM

My arm is f****ng recking.:D

I feel bad because Ash feels bad, all that build time we missed.

The reason we got seen in less than a min is because Ash said "my mate is outside and his face is falling off!"

Morphine is great, third degree burns are not. Oh and coolent tastes like s***e

Ill be OK Im a rufty tufty solider!:D

HandyAndy 20th November 2009 12:14 AM

Ginge.... you must be as tough as the army boots you wear if you,re more concerned about missing the build time

again.... wish you both well for the recovery process.

a harsh reminder to us all of the safety needed whilst building our cars.

andy

gingea1pom 20th November 2009 12:22 AM

Andy,

I’m not that tough, I was in s***e state when we got to the hospital laying on the bed shaking like a leaf with shock, two loads of morphine and Ash stood to the side with his hand under the tap passing me cold compresses for my eyes.

My eyes hurt the most, oh my god they hurt, just makes you think. I don’t ever want to go through pain like that again.

Ash nice driving mate, hope you don’t get a ticket, if you do I will go halves, and you still owe me for the car park at the hospital!

Ginge, i know what you,re thinking mate, but don,t think about what didn,t happen, (easy to say i know ).
in a strange way, at least either of you weren,t alone at the time, sounds like you both helped eachother, for that well done

andy

AshG 20th November 2009 12:51 AM

well we would have been ok as dogwood was with us too.

Bonzo 20th November 2009 02:41 AM

Omg

F**k me chaps, that looks real nasty

What pipe burst off Ash, was there an air lock in the system somewhere

Poor Ginge looks like he copped it big time :(

Hope you both make a speedy recovery, take it easy chaps, plenty of beer and R & R. :)

Land Locked 20th November 2009 06:17 AM

WOW, OUCH. I've seen a few nasties over the years from working on cars, but thats one of the worst.

Wishing you both a speedy recovery.

adrianreeve 20th November 2009 08:12 AM

Ouch!!!!! Hope you both recover soon, that looks very nasty indeed.

If you don't want to finish your build now (too many bad memories) I'll take it off your hands for £250!

Take care guys

Adrian

AshG 20th November 2009 08:13 AM

top rad hose blew off on a join. the joiner we used didnt have a bead on it which i think was the cause of the problem. ginge and i learnt the hard way i hope everyone else uses our lesson

even if it had chopped my arm off i would never sell it after all the work thats gone into it

adrianreeve 20th November 2009 08:21 AM

I'm with you Ash, after all the work I've put in, I'd sooner sell the house and live in the car!

Hope you both feel better soon.

Cheers

Adrian

londonsean69 20th November 2009 08:49 AM

Glad to see you are able to speak about it. Burns are horrific injuried, and Ginge looks like he got a right toasting.

Speedy recovery lads.

PS- Ginge, we want the gory pics:D

spud69 20th November 2009 09:06 AM

Sh*te, that's bloody awfull - and Ginge is still smiling. I had a few near misses after saying "that should do", you soon learn to not go by that philosophy. Nothing like that though.....I bet that really hurts.

"IF IN DOUBT - SORT IT OUT"

dogwood 20th November 2009 09:44 AM

Hi
I didn't post anything last night,
because I wanted to see how Ginge and Ash faired up the hospital.

As Ash said we were there running the car up to temp.
Ash was standing at the front by the rad.
Ginge was sitting in the passenger seat watching the dial.

The top hose blew off and poor Ginge got it full in the face and arm
strait from the rad. He had no chance of getting away from it.
Luckily he had the thought of literally throwing himself out of the car
and rip his top off

Ash managed a bit better as when it blew he could at least get away from it.
He still got enough hot water on himself to make him get his trousers of in a rush.

I could see Ginge wasn't fairing so well. It looked like he may go into shock
so we decided the best place would be up the A&E.

Anyway guys, hope you are feeling slightly better this morning.
I'm sure The burns unit at East Grinstead will get you going again Ginge.

Just on a slightly lighter note.
When Ash's wife see him wandering about in his underpants, she asked him what had happened.
He told her he had burned the top of his leg.
First thing she did.......

Yea... check all was well in the marital department..
And they say men have a one track mind..

mark 20th November 2009 12:27 PM

Its one of those situations where you say it could have been worse but was actually pretty horrific to start with

Good to see your both ok albeit injured and in pain! and hope you make a speedy recovery.

Jezzer99 20th November 2009 03:06 PM

Makes you realise how dangerous playing around with cars can be

Out of interest, would it be worthwhile posting a pic of the offending joiner so we know what doesn't work?

Here's to a speedy recovery :)

RAYLEE29 20th November 2009 03:23 PM

Dont know what to say except hope the pain eases soon and you both heal nicely take care of yourselves
ive joined hoses with plain tube before and never had one pop off
It really is a lesson learned the hard way for you guys
on another note when your ready to play again check the radiator cap isnt too high a poundage most cars are happy with 7llbs but ive seen caps upto 30llbs!!! it really should of vented off the pressure before popping off the hose
and im sorry if this sounds like bolting the door after the horse has bolted its not meant that way
good luck and hope you still make the show if your up to it im hoping to go on sunday
All the best Ray

dogwood 20th November 2009 04:16 PM

Actually Ray, that is the conclusion we came to that the cap was at fault.
It certainly wasn't at full boiling point when it blew.
I personally didn't see any prob with the joint, in fact Ash did the top hose exactly the same as mine.
Mines been no probs for the last 3000 miles. and that's in the summer heat of the south west of France.

I think it was just one of those unfortunate accidents.
It's just a shame Ginge got hurt so bad, because obviously Ash feels really guilty about it.

gingea1pom 20th November 2009 04:46 PM

I'm alive!!!!

Hi all,

Just a quick update.

Went to the specialist burns unit at East Grinstead where the nurse proceeded to remove large quantities of dead skin, really not as painful as it sounds until she started pulling the hairs on my arm! I have another appointment, this time, at Salisbury burns unit (working my way across from Chatham to home via burns units) on Tuesday.

Here is the only picture I have which was taken by Ash in the hospital whilst he had his hand under the cold tap! The picture doesn’t really do it justice, not that I am trying to big myself up.

[IMG][/IMG]

dogwood 20th November 2009 04:54 PM

Yup thats what I saw...
Glad you didn't post the picture of your neck..Yuk..

I picked Ging's Sweat shirt up about 2 mins after the accident.
It was still almost too hot to hold.
God knows what it must have felt like whilst still wearing it.

Ash has now left the county.
So Ging you'll have to wait to beat him up..

David

gingea1pom 20th November 2009 04:57 PM

Dogwood,

I have more pictures taken today, it is going to get (look) worst before it gets better.:(

I will see Ash tomorrow, he owes me £2.50 for the car park:D

jasongray5 20th November 2009 04:59 PM

Speedy recovery to both of you.

Think everyones going to stand well back when they test their own cars up to temp/pressure now. Just a shame people had to get hurt to learn this lesson eh?

Jas

Bonzo 20th November 2009 05:00 PM

That looks nasty Ginge

I hope you are feeling a little better today ( Wishfull thinking I suspect )

As a lifelong welder I am no stranger to nasty burns

Never had any on such a large area & can well imagine how the pair of you are feeling today :(

Makes my yesterdays arc burn insignificant & thats stinging like F**K

Get well soon the pair of you :)

flyerncle 20th November 2009 05:25 PM

Speedy recovery Guys, had hot water on me from engines but never that bad.

All the best.

londonsean69 20th November 2009 05:52 PM

That's a nasty nick there Ginge.

Ash must have been mortified. It's bad enough hurting yourself, but being there when someone else is injured is horrific.

Obviously, it's no-ones fault, it's just "One of those things". Bloody painful none the less though.

gingea1pom 20th November 2009 06:43 PM

Just a quick update, I have just spoken with Ash as he was driving down the A303 to drop the car at the show.:D

He went to CBS and got two lengths of beaded aluminium tube then fitted them and ran the car up to temp, whilst stood in the kitchen.:D

The upshot being the fan cut in and the rad cap was venting. So as we suspected our hose connection was to blame.:(

See some of you guys tomorrow at 1pm, I will be the slightly sun burnt one.:p

dogwood 20th November 2009 07:33 PM

Ginge mate.
Glad to see ya a bit more chippa.

Can you apologies to Ash when you see him.
I wanted to get out today to give him a hand loading up.
Trouble was the delivery I was waiting for didn't arrive till nearly 4:00:mad:

Have a safe journey down, It don't look like I'm going to make it.
SWMBO......Do I need to say more???

David

Kempy 21st November 2009 02:32 PM

So how did the show go Ginge?

tkpm 21st November 2009 07:08 PM

Saw them both at the show today, they both seem to be doing well.
i can see why ginge is such a postive person after talking to him.

chriseyj 21st November 2009 07:37 PM

Youch!! hope your arm gets better that looks awful.
I have a blister on my hand about the size of a £2 coin from leaning on a hot chassis tube this week, idiot! and I thought that hurt at the time but can't imagine what that felt like. I've resisted picking the blister though.

Ironically I read a post on locostbuilders last night when looking up rads about some "beading pliers" that you can get from B&Q put a nice lip on alloy/copper pipe easily.

Heres some links, think you could make these though with an old pair of pliers.
