Why don't my wheels fit on?

HI Guys,

I assembled the front suspension the other day, wishbones, uprights, brake discs onto the uprights, wheel on (13" capri steel wheel) ran the nuts down and they bottomed out inside the nut caps before they got to the wheels, about 3/8" gap between the bottom of the nut and the wheel.

Do I simply need open nuts that will run all the way down, or am I being completely dull, and missed something out?

Thanks,

Sam

Hi Sam

You'll find that you need to use some open nuts.

If you want closed ones, you should be able to find some deeper ones or perhaps you could fit shorter studs.

I notice that you said your wheels are 13" rims.

You may find that you have a problem fitting those to the rear of the car as they will most likely foul the lower wishbone mounting points.

It would be best to check the rear fitment before you start spending out on new nuts or studs ;)

I had to fit a 15" steel wheel to the back of my roadster, as a 14" wheel wouldn't clear the lower wishbone/upright connection. Are your cap nuts off an alloys wheel? Because alloy wheel nuts are normally much shorter.

Yes my 14" Escort alloys didn't clear the rear hub lower wishbone mounts.

Didn't mind though as they are pants to look at :D

I ended up putting a set of 15" RS alloys on the car.
Still not too keen on the look, but will do until I can afford some bling ;)

Looking at the problem, I may have been able to get the 14" wheels fitted with a litte re-work of the rear hub lower mounts but still would have been very tight.

thanks guys, yep I have some 15" wheels for the rear, I quite like the look of 13's on the front and 15's on the back.

Thanks for the advice with the nuts, I'm just glad I wasnt just having a stupid moment, looking at it scratching my head thinking if I'd missed anything out.
