Engine mount box section query
Morning everyone,
With regards to the box section for the engine mounts (I'm using the dohc) would I be ok using 45mm with a 2mm wall box or should I order up some 30mm? If I do need 30 which wall thickness should I get, 2 or 3? It's just that a) I've found some 45mm and b)is the 30mm strong enough? Thanks Ashley |
you would have to show us your planned design to get any idea.

If you're making the custom engine mounts described in the book for non-pinto engines, personally i'd go for the bigger stuff as by the time you drill the hole for the bolt and then put the lock nut on, it doesn't leave that much space to get a spanner/socket in there to tighten it up. I'd also go for 3mm personally as I would think 2mm could end up bending under the weight & twist of the engine?

Ah, well I'm at work at the mo so can't provide pictures but here goes:
I've made two plates to the same profile and hole pitches as the original mounts to bolt to the engine and two plates to bolt on to the land rover rubbers that are on the way. The rubbers will be mounted to 3mm plate welded to the bottom chassis rails as per book. Then I'll bridge the gap with the box section I've mentioned. At the moment I've worked out all the angles and lengths but this is based on 40mm box. The drivers side will leave the engine at a 48.07 degree angle and is 224.77 long along it's longest length. Hopefully this makes sense and helps! I'm open to any criticism/suggestions Cheers Ash |
I used 30x30x2 box section, I don't expect it to cause any problems.

Brilliant, thanks for the replies. I've ordered up some 40sq 3mm wall to be safe.

Just about to fabricate some mounts for my Pinto, i thought the book spec was 6mm plate across the chassis rails and at the ends of the box section, but have other people used 3mm with success?

Just dug out the book, its 5mm for the ends of alternative engine mounts and the plates to cross the chassis rails... I've been able to get some 6mm for free so will be using that if 3mm isn't tough enough... Just wanted to see if others have used 3mm and found it ok?

I'm confused now, why u got to use the alternative mounts when the book spec mounts are for a pinto?
Only asking cause im using a pinto, and ive already cut all the EM plates out of 3mm  |
