If you can get the steel go for it. Thicker is OK as well, mine are 6mm (cost me a pint
)
As for the cutting out - if where you work has a plasma cutter then you are laughing.
Failing that, I used hole saws in a drill press to start the lightening slots, then joined them up with a jigsaw. Bit of filing and sorted.
