I had a nightmare fitting my diff, it took me hours to get it right. The checks I did on mine were - check level of output flanges (ie both at same height), check output shaft central in trans tunnel and check output flange square to chassis. I don't think it has to be perfect and doubt it was in the donor car but getting things spot on at this stage can save a lot of tears later. Take your time, check and double check and it will come out fine.
