BB if you're getting new drills try a local hardware shop and get Cobalt drills with some cutting compound, CT-90. They are the dogs bo**oxs, probably will a little bit more then B&Q HSS drills but will last a lot longer. If the cutting oil starts smoking you are going too fast and not enough pressure, should see a constant flow of swarf from the drill, then ease of the pressure as the drill comes through the other side to stop it catching the edge, you will hear the tone change of the drill.

Sometimes Adli or Lidl have decent pillar drills in for £45.
