There isn't much freedom -- attach the gear stick and move the gearbox around, and make sure the gear stick does not foul the tranny tunnel tube, you can access the reverse switch, and the clutch fork is clear off the chassis.
Just move the gearbox backwards while these constraints are satisfied.

My bellhousing mounting flange is about 5.5 cm into the engine bay, but I have the Zetec thermostat housing protruding from the back of the head.
