But formally such repeaters don't fulfill the visibility requirements, so it's down to the tester to either overlook this or fail you.

The main purpose of the repeaters is to be visible to vehicles moving alongside of you in traffic, who don't see either your front or rear. This purpose is best served if they are mounted as far forward as possible. I guess that explains why Caterham and Westfield mount them on the front wing.
